FTTC install fail

[link to this post]

Was due to have FTTC installed today but it failed.

The Openreach engineer, I think he was a contractor, couldn't do the install because he didn't have keys to the PCP! Wow. Wonder how long I have to wait before BT can find the keys?

He also said it's better to get an AM appointment because keys take 2 hours to get from BT.

I wonder BT function at all.

Plusnet FTTC.

That's really almost exactly what happened on my install... but he didn't do any of the ringing up first and he sat outside in his van for about 15 minutes before coming in. We turned the lights on in the house so he could see we where in. I honestly think if we hadn't seen him he would have probably driven off and called us a no show.

He also told me it was the first FTTC install he'd done on his own...

Still these things happen... I wonder how quickly I can get a new BT Openreach engineer?!? If it goes beyond my cut-off date with BE I'll have to cancel the FTTC install and maybe try again in the new year.

The ISP need to arrange an expedited appointment because of the failure by BT OR. This should be within a week and can be at a weekend if appropriate.

The BT OR installer did not turn up for my install and after much complaining to BT they did this for me with an appointment arranged for a Monday and OR rang on the Saturday and asked if they could come then. Person who came said they were asked(!) to work Saturdays but normally no work was planned for then!

BT Infinity 2 - IP profile 77 / 20 - super fast!

Interesting that in the modern age, an electronic keypad system can't be put into place (with a physical key alternative if power cuts). The code could be changed at the end of each day if used.

Followed by people having fun guessing code, or hitting keypad with hammer etc
Then the keypad is hidden by a lockable panel and back to square one.

I've been onto my ISP who contacted BT. Apparently the engineer had added some notes to the call which talked about there being a terrorist threat, flood or fire problem. You've got to laugh... it was a bit windy yesterday but no flood!

Just as in the other thread, linked by Robertos, the engineer was from MJ Quinns.

The ISP, obviously Plusnet, is working on getting an expedited appointment.

Well today was the 2nd attempt at FTTC installation. They didn't turn up. BT hadn't booked an engineer even though they'd accepted the appointment.

Now provisionally rebooked with confirmation of that appointment coming on Thursday hopefully.

Who's voting for a successful installation third time? smile

[re: techguy] [link to this post]

Finally got connected to FTTC today. The BT Openreach engineer was friendly and impressive and replaced some bits in the copper to the house because they were worn out and *might* affect the VDSL speed.

He said he as getting an 80Mb sync at the CAB... then on his test machine at the house also 80Mb. He said I'm pretty close to the CAB so should be good.

Plusnet shows 78Mb sync speed but get this result through a wired connection

http://www.speedtest.net/result/2344597384.png

BT engineer thought it must be some restriction being applied outside the BT network. All very pleased anyway.

The only downside is the email I got from my old provider telling me that BT have ceased the line and my services have been suspended. Fortunately phone still works and so does FTTC. Migration from Be to Plus is definitely not a fun experience. smile

In which case the only thing I can suggest is calling Plusnet as something is adrift and it may well be internal to them - but why you are seeing upstream of 12Mbit I don't know as usually the speed limit is because they have put you on the 40/10 product by mistake

This morning and still only 18 hours into FTTC.

Tested on the same wired computer after the overnight period and it's coming out at 72.4Mb from Speedtest.net. Wow! See here. Looks like whatever was capping the speed has seen the line profile and increased it. It'll be interesting for me to see if the CAB DLM steps in tonight and reduces the line speed or adds interleave. I'm being very careful around the BT Openreach box and following Robertos advice very carefully.

Now my only problem is my LAN is slower than my WAN! smile

Thanks everyone for all the advice and help.
