Speed drop on fibre

[link to this post]

Had 40/20 FTTC installed today. Instal was OK though Kelly man's idea of a good job was to fix the master socket to the wall with a single screw. OR supplied a HG612 modem, PN supplied a Sagem 2704N router.

Immediately after instal I used the TBB speed tester which showed 37Mb/s down, 18 up. Wired ethernet from router to PC. Samknows said my line was OK for well over 60Mb/s on FTTC so these figures are about what I'd expect.

Unplugged everything, screwed master socket to wall properly, tidied up wiring and reconnected everything. Now getting 12 down, 16 up. Depowered modem for a minute and reconnected. No improvement.

i'd give the line stats if I could but I haven't hacked the HG612.

Any ideas? I'll leave it for a day or so to see if it settles but I'm not exactly holding my breath.

Same speeds still from the test socket?

If moving full master including back plate possible that one wire is loose, is the phone working perfectly and clear?

Voice line is fine. I'll have to dig out an RJ11 to BT adaptor lead or microfilter to connect to test socket.

Found a microfilter and connected to test socket. Doesn't help.

Make sure he hasn't left star wiring, with a junction box and extension coming off the incoming line before the master socket. Extension may be telephone, or old builtin alarm or Sky box.

Definitely no problems like that. It's straight from a box outside the house to the master socket. Last time I had a line problem the OR guy remade the connections in the box outside.

In tidying up the wiring, you haven't clipped/tied any together have you? Or ended up with a cable going very close to the modem power plug?

The RJ11 lead is coiled up to keep it neat, but it was like that from the start when the speed was good. The power plugs are well away from the signal wiring.

Have you tried the IP Profile checks, i.e. http://speedtest.btwholesale.com that will mirror your sync speed, and if that is still good suggests an oddity with the PlusNet profile mirroring.

Same result on the BT Wholesale test as the TBB test.

I wish I could get at the modem to see sync speed, SNR etc, like in the good old days of ADSL where it was easy to get the stats.. As a result I've no idea if it's a VDSL sync speed problem or something at PN's end. Not willing to hack my fibre modem just yet.

ebay?

The Huawei HG612 is often more expensive than the ECI on eBay because the Huawei is easily hacked to show the stats.

In due course I'll probably hack my modem following Kitz's instructions. But not until the dust has settled on this problem.

You missed a trick there smile.

Run the BT Wholesale test and continue to the Further Diagnostics at the bottom of the initial results page.

That gives you the down and up IP Profiles. The upstream will be 2, 10 or 20 depending on the product you are on. The downstream IP Profile multiplied by 1.033 gives you your sync within 5-6kbps.

Given the IP Profile, you then check that against the Current line speed held in your Plusnet Member Centre >> Connection settings >> High speed broadband. The Plusnet figure should be the IP Profile rounded down to one decimal place.

I may be wrong but I think that microfilters are not used with FTTC, only with ADSL.?
If it was all working ok before you did the tidying, it might be worth trying to revert to the way the installer left it [including the missing socket screw] and reporting a bad install.?

If you don't have a phone; Sky box; or any other kit connected to the line you don't even need any filters on FTTC or ADSLx.

Re this case, to get to the test socket you have to remove not just the NTE5A faceplate but also the interstitial VDSL2 filter plate. Most people then use a dangly filter to provide the modem cable socket, though I believe it isn't necessary - I've never tried that.

All change this morning! The TBB speed test is giving me 73.86 down. 17.18 up. On a 40/20 service. The BTW basic test gives 76.08/15.52. The further diagnstics give the IP profiles as 77.42/20.

Not only has the problem gone away, I seem to be getting 80/20 for the price of 40/20 so perhaps I should close the ticket before PN find outsmile

I've done that before on ADSL. You need a converter to go from RJ11 to the standard phone socket Worked a treat where no phone was needed.

One of those cables we used to connect good old-fashioned dial-up modems to a telephone socket should do the trick - I've probably got a cupboard full of them!

Don't plusnet provision 80/20 for their 40/20 product and just limit it on their side?

Seems OP got lucky smile

I also understood that the 40/20 service was provisioned as 80/20 and limited by PN. Presumably this is simply a marketing exercise as the marginal cost of providing 80/20 rather than 40/20 must be negligible.

Ought to add that by asking nicely I got the same deal on 40/20 fibre as a new customer. £3.75/month for 6 months and £50 cashback. I rather expected the 6 month price reduction but when they said I was also getting the £50 my ghast was almost flabbered. I've been with PN broadband since 2002. This was when 512kb/s was about £20/month and we thought it marvellous and good value. It was certainly cheaper than the Home Highway I had before that because I only had to pay for 1 line. I'll think of it as loyalty being suitably rewarded.

Now I'm getting a (very) good service I don't want to ask too many questionssmile
