Setting up a Home Hub 5

[link to this post]

I recently bought a BT Home Hub 5 off eBay. Has anybody got any tips to help me set it up.

Many thanks in advance.

The information in the link is incorrect. The HH5 Type A and Type B both have RED WAN ports. You can use either. I have both.

The red WAN ports on the Home Hubs 3/4/5 are for connecting to a separate modem. If you use a HH5 with the built-in modem, you connect using the grey DSL port.

Have waste paper basket handy and just simply drop it in the bin and buy a Netgear or similar router that does a better Job wink

I just replaced mine with a Netgear D6400 and its leagues better in every way, don't be fooled by BT Claims of the fastest wireless as this in my case anyway is not true.

Have you got around £150 to give me to buy one (because I haven't). Anyway I was after an all in one solution. Besides it's got to be better than the one Plusnet have supplied me (not that I've had any problems with that).
Next please.

Correction I said, 'Have you got around £150 to give me to buy one (because I haven't)'. I was quoting time2die when they recommended me a £150 router. Before you say anything I didn't pay £150 for this Home Hub 5.

Re: Setting up a Home Hub 5

[re: Timalay] [link to this post]

Point taken..wink Yeah its not exactly a cheap alternative but hopefully in the long run it will provide a better network connection than this HH5.

To be honest i went with Bt because it was costing us £35.99 for Xilo Fibre with a fixed 75 Gig Package and another £12.99 for BT Sport.

I now have the above for £16.99 a month with BT Sport included and unlimited downloads.

To be fair though Xilo are leagues better than BT in terms of speed and service and once this contract ends i will seriously consider using others and not BT.

What i like about the HH5 is the interface and ease of use when you login to the Home Hub.

On Xilo website you need a degree in engineering and web design as it has the most confusing interface for a user with terms for broadband only a technical person would understand.

Now I'm not stupid but I'm not tech savvy either to the point of negotiating myself around the settings on Xilo Website for when you use there broadband service.

Xilo in my opinion were the best provider of broadband i have ever had,but to pay 3 times the money made little to no sense and they need to make there website far more user friendly as its way to technical for most broadband users.

I will seriously reconsider RobertoS.wink i have to say apart from there very confusing control panel and website in general the service they provided was very good, the ticket system was very fast and efficient but trying to get through to actually speak with someone was another matter and on the occasion i did get through they in all honesty didn't seem that interested in the problems i had.

Only Matt himself resolved the few issues i had over the years.and those were very few and far between.

I don't like BT one little bit,but the deal was exceptional at the time but sadly we are talking BT here and things haven't really improved for a massive organisation that in theory should be providing the best service and should be leagues ahead of smaller independent suppliers but they are not ?

Yesterday I ordered line rental from pulse8broadband, moving from BT, to change from £24.31pm rental to £14pm. That gives rental, caller display, basic 1571, ex-directory. I lose E&W, but seeing as my number of outgoing calls in the quarter to 17 April was six ...!

That would be typical. My any network minutes on mobile are far more than I need, and now 0800 is free on mobiles as well. The p8 call charges are a fraction of all the major providers'.

Uno have similar line and call charges to p8's coming but I wanted to get on with things. Also the question on uno of Vat inc or not.

Next thing is to consider over the next fortnight whether to stay with Plusnet or go. The saved £10+ per month opens up the more expensive ISP providers. Current short-list P8 where the line rental is included in FTTC prices, and AAISP Home::1 which has sufficient allowance for me. AAISP also do line-only at £10pm!! You can add their VOIP and that seems to come out in the same low-cost phone service, but I think what I've done is more flexible and easier as a first step away from my core belief in BT as phone service provider.

My FTTC is behaving OK on speed tests and BQM again, after a short period of chaos a couple of weeks ago. So I'm not sure what to do.

Can't do anything now of course until the phone has moved over. So keeping a closer than normal watch on things. I feel normal use isn't quite right, but still can't be sure that isn't down to my kit.

do pulse8 use talktalk GEA or BTw GEA for FTTC?

aaisp home::1 if you ok with the price I expect will be a solid choice and you keep ipv6 as well.

I haven't asked yet, but have a feeling from some of prof's posts it is SMPF TT Tails with WLR3 phone. I'll probably alert him and ask for confirmation if he knows, assuming he doesn't spot my posts about them in a while.

He did ask them a lot of questions before he moved to them, before they had FTTC, which he is now on with them.

Although on the face of it their headline FTTC price looks high, it ends up almost identical to Plusnet's. Phone call charges much lower.

I've just had a signable PDF from them and returned it, and also an email from BT regretting my leaving. Scheduled date 28 July.

Most of the acronyms used here are jibberish to me, and many others i expect lol. Puolse8 fibre is resold TTB ( The all important B indicating business) - Whether heads, tails or anything in between I could not tell you. As for my phone, as it still comes from the exchange after fibre switch, I assume it's still TT LLU. Obviously they use BTW in the absence of LLU.
The BB is running nice now - Ignore the red yesterday ( gear swop) - a resync this morning gaining a little more lost from my bad line and bad billion router. Pleased with P8. Three OR visits and no charges. http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/b6dc4e85ba0...

Its quite easy - as long as you have the username and password details. Ignore the BT specific screens that you will probably see at startup in the interface - they have no use.

Once the correct username and password has been entered, it'll state its connected and you should be away

Reading moods in user forums is always difficult, perhaps we can all just accept that some nuancing to the posts was lost.

Google while perhaps having all the answers can be a minefield unless you use the right phrase when searching these days, a good many searches push sites trying to sell you stuff i.e. adverts or people trying to catch search traffic rather than old fashioned answers.

So, first of all you change the username and password http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9116

And you turn off Smart Setup http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9136

And you split the 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless networks and turn off Smart Wireless http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9102 by doing this:

1. Select the 5GHz tab and select NO to "Sync with 2.4 GHz:".

2. Then choose a new SSID by adding "5" to the existing one, so you can tell the difference between 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks.

3. While you're there change "Channel selection:" from "Smart wireless" to the current channel.

4. Then press the "Apply" button.

5. Then choose the 2.4GHz tab and change "Channel selection:" from "Smart wireless" to the current channel on 2.4GHz.

6. Then press the "Apply" button again.

7. On your wireless devices now you can select which band to connect to.

And you're good to go smile
