It is a bank holiday with poor weather, so everyone is at home watching Netflix.
That is my explanation as to why my ADSL speed is slow this afternoon.

Lucky you, mine have been dropping bit by biut for the last few weeks, I started off at 39Mb/s when I first started with Plusnet now it is down to 20, it was fine until BTOR mucked about with the cabinet.
Bloated toad for you, the way it is going I may as well go back to my last provider when my contract is up.

Speeds vary subject to conditions ect, my talktalk speed dropped down to about 55mb/s a few weeks ago, but has picked up to about 68mb/s so I'll give it another couple of weeks before I start moaning to get it back up to 75 mb/s +

Not issues, just the outcome of value broadband services during busy periods...
My BT Infinity has been popping out a few short single thread results, but nothing that has affected me.... it's just natural on a contended service I suppose...
However I do understand that on Plusnet it can be a it of a pain due to the way their prioritization setup works...
My connection today's looking pretty good too, considering its Bank Holiday Monday.... maybe due to big parts of the county being offline though :L

Indeed - if we all posted every time there was a little glitch in our speed, which could be for any number of reasons (children streaming something on the telly/tablet?) as opposed to a sustained problem, the forum would be thoroughly clogged up.

Aye, the BT area of the forum would surely be very full of posts from me.... and I consider my line to running pretty damned 'sweeet' Well that puts me off BT. I genuinely rarely have any kind of speed variation. My TBBQMs often show evening latency but it's never had a noticeable effect. I'm guessing it's just ping packets being deprioritized rather than genuine latency. I wouldn't stay with an ISP if it couldn't give me full speed speed whenever I ask for it. PN came very close to losing me last year because I considered their service to be very poor. And that was just roughly once a month I'd have a bad night which I had to fix by rebooting my router.

I suppose losing a few meg for a few minutes once in a blue moon on single thread is very important for some....
don't know about latency, mine seems to stay very stable.... unless I'm saturating my upstream...

............. And that was just roughly once a month I'd have a bad night which I had to fix by rebooting my router. Can you explain how rebooting your router fixed you speed issue, that a gateway hop wouldn't (or didn't)?

Rebooting is how I change gateways. My router (much as I love it for its stability) doesn't have a disconnect option in the UI. I thus only have two ways to change gateways - unplug the router, or reboot the router. I can do the latter from the comfort of my armchair so that's what I normally do.

I just noticed that Plusnet speed has dropped from 74Meg to 48Meg. So, what happen at PN today?

Auch don't worry about it bud.according to the experts on TBB we don't need more than 20Mb anyway even if it's an average size family home.
|
|
|
That wasn't what was said at all... what was said was that a family home could cope on 20Mbps just fine...
Someone losing speed often means a quality issue and thats unacceptable...
|
|
|
|
What was also said is that most households won't pay more for a speed upgrade - given that takeup of FTTC is currently still under 30% (from last I saw) then most people are choosing not to upgrade from ADSL. The "market" in general is not willing to pay more unless their current service is causing them serious grief.

oh yes sorry forgot that part
It's so true aswell!

Average family is still 2.2. Let's say 4 for sake of argument.
20mbps / 4 = about 5mbps / person.
More than enough.
How much does anyone need as opposed to like?

I am getting a shade under 10Mbs with ADSL2+ and a standard PN router. This seems quite adequate and although I may download a TV catchup it provides HD streaming for occasional football.
For what I pay its steal!

I think you forget about when people are multitasking, that can soon use bandwidth.

With technology we are supposed to have more time to do things but people seem to need to watch catch up TV while carrying out other tasks.
If the programme is not worth concentrating on then why have it on at all?

Some people like to have the radio on to provide a little 'background distraction' while doing other things (I assume this is still the case - my mum used to turn on the valve wireless while doing housework). Nowadays people are just as likely to use the TV for the 'background distraction' and with 4K broadcasting over internet becoming a possibility increasing 'bandwidth wastage' is going to happen IMO.

You keep repeating this. It is not what was said at all.
Either you are deliberately distorting what you read, or you really don't understand what you were told. Either way, you should stop.
It is true that most family homes find 20Mb/sec fast enough. And you'd be rather untypical to "need" fast internet all the time - if ever!
