Within next 12-17 hours to go will be no longer with Plusnet FTTC with line only since 2014. Very sad to leave but got the right decision and time to move on with new ISP tomorrow - look forward to G.fast 160/30.
Got SMS text from engineer to say site visit to install broadband and phone line tomorrow between 8am and 1pm.
Wish me best of luck

You may need luck, G.fast can be a bit iffy, you need to be pretty close to the cabinet and even then it can be hit and miss.
Why are you sad to leave plusnet? They belong to a massive company, I am sure they will survive. When/if i leave plusnet I will not be sad, I was a bit sad to leave Allpay wireless broadband when I left them as they were a local company.

Why would you be sad to move from one utility provider to another? Who cares, it’s a utility by definition. A utility has (or at least should have) no bearing on ones life.
Companies are not people, in fact your love for Plusnet over the years has always perplexed me as you do know who provides their technical support….. go on, guess as it’s a company I’m sure you’ve slagged off before. I’ll give you a clue, it’s not Serco but does end in apita.

I don't understand why the new ISP wants a new line installing though. G.Fast normally simply replaces the FTTC on the existing copper, and should just need the new modem installing and the router connected to that.
Just like early FTTC with the HG612 or ECI one. I'm sure you've done that in the past.
You shouldn't need an engineer either.
I think you will find ceasing the current line will result in a Cease fee from Plusnet. Unless they don't pass it on.
But, having said that, good luck.

There are multiple orders open on your line which are due to complete by 25-May-2021
There is currently a Broadband cease pending or in progress against this line. This cease is due to complete by 25th May 2021. This will not stop you ordering Broadband from a new supplier, but it will delay the provision of the new Broadband service.
It say on Plusnet email:

We're sorry to hear you're leaving us.
Another service provider has told us that you want to move your broadband and phone away from Plusnet.
Your broadband and phone service is scheduled to transfer automatically on 26th May 2021 and will result in the cancellation of your Plusnet account. This means that on this date, your services will be taken over by your new provider and you won't need to contact us to cancel your service with us.

All migrations result, in the Openreach system, in a Cease of the current broadband service and a Provide of the new one. WHich normally happen within a couple of minutes or so of each other.
That doesn't result in an Openreach cease charge, though in the past Plusnet have been known to charge it and been forced to refund.
However you say your new ISP says you must have a new line. That would result in a valid cease charge, as you would not be migrating the broadband. ArRe you sure that's what they said, and are you sure an engineer will visit? There will have to be one goes to the cabinet of course.
What about the G.Fast modem? AIUI these are still required.
I hope the engineer does turn up ..... And we don't have you posting that it just didn't happen. My opinion is that your new ISP is a one-man band, not even a man and a dog. Like Jason was for a long time at UKFSN. Amazingly, his website is still up! Copyright 2002-2012. With the old Entanet packages listed. And: If you already have broadband with another supplier you can switch to us. The process is very easy - all you do is obtain a MAC from your existing supplier and place an order on our website. We handle the rest for you MACs required eh? !!

Maybe not on here, but this is not the only site on the net. Also been told by people in the past that knows other people that have had some problems with g.fast, yes I know it is like someone telling someone else at the pub, but I can only go by what I have been told. But most info i have is from the net. If you are really close to the cabinet then it is fine, but the further away you are the loss of speed is worse than normal FTTC.

Easy enough to find out, I know what cabinet I am connected at and even if we had G.fast or I changed provider that is not going to change as it would mean moving the cable from my house and I doubt that would happen. Not that I would pay the amount that providers want for G.fast.

49.99 per month for gfast 160/30 57.99 for gfast 330/50
That is a fair chunk of money per month, when I spend out for things I look at how many hours I have to work to get that, so I would have to work over 5 hours for that. I don't think I would pay that price just for a bit more speed to be honest.
I thought Zzoomm prices was slightly high for full fibre, but seeing the prices you are paying maybe not. £39 will give 400Mb/s download and 40 up, another tenner will give 400Mb/s upload.
If I go for Zzoomm it will be the 100Mb/s download, 10 upload for £29 a month. If Zzoom was not coming here, and we had G.fast, I would stick with what I have got, not that I would be able to get G.fast as I am over 400metres away from the cabinet, but if I could, I would not.
I hope it works out for you, and you think the cost is worth it, I know you are only paying half.

There is nothing wrong with going for an ISP that no one have heard off, and to be honest I expect someone have heard of it otherwise they would not be around. Sometimes it pays to take the chance, I went with a local wireless ISP a few years ago, and it was fine for a while until they could not cope with the traffic.
They offered me 10Mb/s for the same price I was paying for barely 3 at the time, so it made sense to go for it. But I don't think they realised how many people would sign up to them and towards the end of my two years with them, they just could not cope, they did say they were going to update the system, but by that time FTTC had come here. But I say it was brave for the company to do it as they were and still are a payment processing company.
Sometimes you take your chances, you lose or win. The same with Zzoomm fibre that is coming here, I may take a chance with them, but things are different now for me as I have a pretty good speed that is fine for what I need it for, it comes down to what Plusnet can offer me price wise at the end of my contract.
you are right, the price Max is going to pay is pretty high

I don't understand why the new ISP wants a new line installing though. G.Fast normally simply replaces the FTTC on the existing copper, and should just need the new modem installing and the router connected to that.
I can't speak for this install, but we often install a new circuit for our customers, rather than deal with takeovers or other potential issues. It's not that big a deal if that's how it is done by this ISP.

As I said, I can't comment on what was or was not done on *this* install.
But there is no reason why an ISP has to take over a circuit, and not do a new provide in principle, so I don't quite understand why that concept was so bothersome to you. Indeed with SOGFAST and SOGEA it might be preferential to install a new circuit now.

There is one quite big reason that ISPs tend to take over lines rather than install new ones and that is cost.
The wholesale cost for a migration can be lower than 10% of the cost of a new install.
Thanks

I had an engineer visit in March when I migrated G.Fast > G.Fast. Engineer brought a new MT992, ran all the line checks and confirmed everything was fine and I was happy, I've been on G.Fast since March 2018 so he was a bit surprised that he had been sent - I got a nice new modem to replace my old one which was a bonus
It's not a big surprise that Max had one for a new install....

I'm fully aware of the costs. That is not the point I was making. There seemed to be some assertion on what would be done. I think from this thread in this case there was no new circuit in any case.
The point I was making was simply that there is no reason you can't, and in some cases it might be preferable, to have a new circuit installed, and that for us, as a general rule, we normally do exactly that, but we're not aimed at consumers.

He's already connected to cabinet 8. He has (now had) FTTC from it for over 7 years.
Clearly you don't like him and think he makes things up, but he knows what cabinet he's connected to.
The PCP doesn't change with an upgrade to G.Fast.

I thought I made it clear in my "post-installation" reply to the OP that I now realised an engineer visit is normal to check the line is up to scratch from the technical aspect.
Openreach are still, it seems, taking the safety first approach they initially did with FTTC. Engineer visit and installation of the modem, plus a check for success. I have no problem with that either.
The issue was that he had been told a new line had to be installed. I was proved right! It was unnecessary.
What would have happened if the earth test or the final test failed is a different question. Similarly with your upgrade.

Just because he has one line connected to a cabinet, does not mean the second will be too. My sister in-law had connections to two cabinets plus an EO at one time. Friends of theirs likewise.
A friend close by here has his residential line to one cabinet and business to a second.

99.99% of the time it does.
It's a migration. 100% of the time that will be the same line on the same cabinet.

Read what he posted - it was to be a NEW line installed.

It would still be from the same cabinet.
He's ordering a product with an extremely short range.
Upon ordering you are given an estimate based on the cabinet number quoted on the wholesale checker.
He knows it's cabinet 8.
I know it's cabinet 8.
It's cabinet 8, new line or not.
That's how all VDSL2 and G.Fast orders work.
Every single 1.

He's posted about a dozen screenshots of his order, of the wholesale checker confirming a cease, photos of the engineers JDSU.
I'm not here to judge anyone, but yes, I believe him.
And just because it says Cabinet X on te checker - it does not always happen that way.
It does in 99.99% of cases, excluding the occasional database error.
You cannot order G.Fast from 1 PCP and have it delivered from another PCP.
It doesn't have the range to be enabled from the next PCP away.

A friend had the same at his old house and one cabinet had FTTC and the other didn't.
Houses to his right up to the end of the street couldn't get FTTC houses to his left to the start of the street could.
What was weirdest was his original line couldn't get FTTC but the second line he got for working from home could.
Thanks

I don't think that knowing somebody that knows somebody else that might have said something is really credible evidence that Gfast is iffy or hit and miss.
I don't have G.fast, I don't anyone with G.fast, we don't have G.fast in this city as far as I know, so I can only get info from other websites and from people who may know other people that has it.

But that is not normal unless there are cables from both cabinets running up your street.
The cabinet I thought I would be connected is closer than the one I am, only just, but it is closer. but as far as I know no one up this street is connected to it A house that is closer to the cabinet that I am not connected to down the road is connected to the same one as I am. I helped them sort out their computer and broadband a few years ago. They have moved now, so I have not seen them for a while.
Ok, just a quick edit, i just had a look on the BT checker just to be nosey and that house is now on the other cabinet, I don't know how far it goes up the road and according to the checker they can get G.fast, speed about 120Mb/s ish
interesting.

What would have happened if the earth test or the final test failed is a different question. Similarly with your upgrade.
This one the engineer did test the line for earthing. All passed and say perfect before he went back to the cabinet to switch over to Gfast from FTTC.
He did say at first if the earthing test and test all FAILED, Gfast will not go head and the FTTC will remain at old provider.

When you stop telling fairy stories maybe I will. How many false statements have you made?
For example you claimed:
Next door and mine are connected to Cabinet 8 G.fast.
And then you say you are being connected the following day. And you stated you did not have G.Fast - but in that post you claim to already have it.

What I meant is next door and mine are connected to the same cabinet 8 - what big deal or moaned over it?
I did say my FTTC will change to GFast with new ISP.
Please stop it now.Enough now.

Seeing as he's had broadband for donkey's years, he made a perfectly true and sensible statement. Why are you continuing to bully him.
We all know at times he tells fairy stories, but wrt the cabinet number that clearly wasn't the case.

Look I am not argue here. Next door and mine are connected to Cabinet 8 G.fast.
PROOF.
You say you are connected, and earlier you said they are connecting you tomorrow. Which fairy story do you want people to believe.
If his posts bother you so much why not just ignore them?

So are you saying that you are NOT connected to the cabinet you thought you would be connected to?
I am still connected to the same cabinet, I put a house number in halfway up the road and that is connected to the other cabinet, but no G.fast, must be too far away. I also put a house number in 5 doors down and that is connected to the same cabinet as me.
So i don't know when they changed things, it could have been a couple of years ago when I saw a load of Open reach vans close to the other cabinet.
I have just done search for an address that is next door to the cabinet I am on and it says nothing about G.fast, so i presume the cabinet I am on is not capable of doing it.
i went past the other one today as I went into town, I was going to have a look at it but forgot, going out for a pint tomorrow so I will do it then if i remember.
Just strange that one cabinet has G.fast and the other don't

My same layout for 36 houses to the cabinet 8 (only 7 houses do have G.fast and the rest of 29 houses do not have G.fast because it too far away from the G.fast cabinet) Out of 36 houses just one house got a clean bill of both high and low for max 330/50 on G.fast. Very strange but that life.
My house max on G.fast is 282/44, next door is 290/44 and two next doors of mine is 330/50 but that was estimated checker by BTw. I actually get max line rate of 210/29 on Openreach Test Kit on the socket. So, BTw checker is misleads really as it did changed estimated today for my house from 282/44 down to 230/34. The real stats from the gfast router say max data rate are 184/28.
Attainable Net Data Rate: 28.571 Mbps 184.549 Mbps (this one should be estimated on BTw checker 184/28 not 282/44 in the first place)

Sorry posted to wrong person. Should have been aimed at Max Max said he was connected to cab 8, and is . Someone argued at length that he couldn't know. adslmax's history of checking the BTW estimates for his line over more than a decade makes it almost impossible for him not to have known it.

49.99 per month for gfast 160/30 57.99 for gfast 330/50
Ouch! I pay a straight £39 a month for 500/500 FTTP. £60 a month would get me 1000/1000 And the price is fixed for 2 years.
Yes, moving to an unknown ISP can be a leap in the dark but its not as if the tech is still being planned.

Actually I pay £25 a month cos my daughter will pay me the rest of £25 toward £49.99 monthly bill for Gfast 160/30.
You forget one thing my area don't have any FTTP (full fibre)
