Email query

[link to this post]

A quick query about mailbox capacity. Is there a maximum limit and, if yes, what happens if it is reached? Does mail get bounced or will the oldest ones get deleted? I had a quick look on the PN portal but didn't spot anything.

The reason for asking is that the main PN address that I use I have only been addressing via googlemail. Its easier to have them accessible from one webpage when I'm out & about (plus the spam filters in googlemail have seemed much better at trapping the junk with few false positives - we'll have to see what the new postini stuff does).

Unlike mail clients that I've used google doesn't give you an option to delete mail after so many days its either delete it or leave it. I've just checked via webmail and my inbox currently has around 2800 messages dating back to around May. I did go through and laboriously tick on all of them from sometime in December and earlier, but when I tried to move them to trash it gave an error & they were all still there! I couldn't be bothered to go through it all again - a "select all" button would have been nice, 2000 clicks gives you finger ache!

TIA

At the bottom of the page is "toggle all"!

Thanks - I'd not twigged that was to select (or unselect) all. Now plodding through from the oldest, 100 emails to a page

Is there a defined limit to an active mailbox though? I've not spotted one yet.

I think I remember reading somewhere that there is no size limit on email per se, but that it was dependant on how long since you last accessed your email.

Maybe somebody from plusnet will be along soon and can give the definitive answer

There's not a maximum limit as such, and we would never purposely bounce email irrespective of the amount of mail in your directories.

We do purge anything older than 21 days from the 'Spam' folder if you have this option enabled on your account.

The only information you will find on the portal is regarding unread email and can be seen here.

In reply to:

If you exceed a total of 25Mb of unread email for more than a 30 day period it will be removed without notice to you.

TBH though this isn't really strictly enforced.

We do run periodic archiving scripts to clear out mailboxes that haven't been accessed in a long time. We also disable none subscription accounts where the account hasn't been accessed for 3 months (which kills any mail/mailboxes on the account).

We have been known to contact customers when their mailboxes have too much mail to be manageable however this is done on a case by case bases and I can't really give a fixed figure as it's based on file structure limitations on the platform as opposed to the actual volume of email.

Hope this helps,

Rgds,
