I think basically we are in agreement that a resync could help, even though it shouldn't. He did one, but I'm not convinced that is where the improvement came from, because of the strange info that comes out of PN.

Night-time sync's are almost always slower than daytime. That's why I said do a daytime one smile.

No point in one tonight. You may get a bit more than now, probably a bit less. Unless there was a lot of noise when you got the 14.

haha - my tired eyes must have read 'during daylight' as 'during night'!! I thought it wasn't good to restart at night.

I'll try another restart mid-morning tomorrow then and report back.

Thanks again for your help

They can help, as it creates a new trigger event that will wander through the various backhaul systems, and may flush out an out of date setting.

If a router lets you drop the PPP session and reauthenticate, rather than a resync that should do it.

But where is/are that/those other setting(s) Andrew? No-one seems to know. There is the BRAS, there is the PN copy. They were both OK and sync was 16Mbps, but still slow until he did the re-sync.

Unless my latest theory about the PN system is correct, and the gain in speed was just a coincidence and had already occurred.

In the past PN have said that when this happens they have to trigger some sort of correction of an "imbalance in the systems", implying within BTW not themselves. But as this phenomenon doesn't seem to occur with any other ISP, frown.

Hi RobertoS,

There's two bits of kit on BTs side that seem to hold line profiles independently (BRAS and MSAN) plus the profile on ours, so mismatches can occur across both. From what I've seen one of either the BRAS and MSAN report their profile to wcr which is the reporting system we use to get our profiles from, I think that's the BRAS that does that. Then the MSAN is (I think) what reports the line profile on a BT speed test result.

It's easy enough to sort when both bits of BT kit are reporting the same and our profile hasn't updated, which if I'm honest is the case most often when there is a mismatch. However sometimes the BRAS and MSAN don't match up and that's when things get fun.

Sometimes an SNR reset will sort it, but if not it means raising a fault unfortunately.

It'd be interesting to know if any other ISPs are noticing this happening, but even if not I assure you I've personally seen and dealt with several mismatches across the exchange kit... I think there's even been one or two on these boards?

Hi Orbrey,

I don't wish to hijack this thread, so just a quick query:-

Should Plusnet's Current Line Speed also regularly adjust for FTTC connections to match BT's IP Profile/BRAS rate?

My Current Line Speed is always reported as 37Mb in the Plusnet Portal, but I have not synced over 30Mb since July.

I have seen a few other Plusnet users reporting some slight glitches with the FTTC profiling system.

My IP Profile is currently 25485 k.

Thanks for that Orbrey smile. Ties in with what you or one of your colleagues said a while back.

When I have a bit of spare time from being a pain here I'll see what more I can find out. Your explanation makes sense, but I'm not convinced. Even you are only saying "that seem to", and several "I think"s.

But something up somewhere there definitely is - we agree on that.

As for the PN line speed occasionally not getting updated, that is a long-standing problem. A nuisance but easy once spotted, as you say. My gut feel is that is something at BTW not yourselves that isn't quite right.

Quick update on this. Did a reboot of the router about and hr ago and it connected at a slightly higher rate of

Stats are below. Quite a few errors but line seems stable enough and I'm more than hapy with thr speed as it's practically double whta I had before the upgrade ysterday.

Stats:

Link Information

Uptime:0 days, 0:55:41
DSL Type:G.992.5 annex A
Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 888 / 17,660
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:440 / 14,374
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]:36.44 / 101.38
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]:12.5 / 20.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:12.5 / 29.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:30.0 / 10.0

Attenuation seems to have dropped slightly since the upgrade - used to be 30-31. Was told it would probably go up 3-4 but I'm not complaning! Just did a speedtest and got this:

Hi there,

It should do, but the equipment that generates the profiles is in the green box rather than the exchange and we don't have any sort of control. I'm not sure why the profiles aren't updating in some cases but we're feeding back on it and expect as the technology matures things will get better.

If you could advise of a ticket ID or PM me your username I'll take a look at your account and see if there's anything we can do?
