The OR guy who came around first time to install FTTC made my extension into my master socket without any extra wiring.

Hi, if you select the free extension option during sign up the engineer will fit the new socket (or transform an existing extension) into the master as long as it's within 30m of the master I believe? If you haven't selected the extension cable option just drop a note on the ticket (probably best to post the ID in here if you do that so we can get it added to the order).

Are you suggesting that an engineer will relocate a master NTE5 using the existing home extension wiring, if she/he thinks it suitable, rather than use a "data extension kit" if a "free extension option" is requested?

I don't believe he'll relocate the master socket, no, but my understanding is that only one socket can be used to connect the fibre modem (or router) so whichever is chosen for this, be it master, a new socket or an existing extension socket, this will become the new fibre 'master socket'.

I've seen it happen where an engineer has actually moved the drop wire to connect to a different socket where the user was lucky, friendly and (most likely) had a good selection of biscuits available though, but that's entirely down to the engineer you get.

Thanks for the clarification smile

It's just that I imagined relocating the NTE5 using existing home extension wiring (i.e. not moving the drop wire) could possibly be problematic if the customer wished to retain a phone socket at the previous location of the NTE5. That would involve back wiring filtered voice using one of the twisted pairs in the existing single cable to do that.

would the engineer use an extension lead for the power if i then said leave it all on the floor lol , think that would be a bit obvious i was going to move it?!

you probably over worrying, a engineer will prefer a quick job to a long job, so if you tell them to just install at that master socket using an extension power cable (which you supply) I am sure they will be happy to oblige.
