Static IP

[link to this post]

Hi, I recently changed from Tiscali to Sky Max. The service is very quick and I can only be pleased.

However, when I was setting up the connection I had to select an IP address automatically from the previous static one I had with tiscali.

I seem to remember that previously I had used a dynamic IP with tiscali and then just changed to a static ip. So it seems that tiscali supported both options.

So, is this not the case with sky?

Because Sky is a no thrils service that works for the majority and is very cheap. Sky want their BB service to just work and the less they offer with it the less chance of any problems in the future for people.

I really wish they did offer a fixed IP as I need one to punch through my work firewall (only allows routing from specific address and firewall providers wont open more than a class C address).

There are some ways around it such as DynDNS which allows me to talk to my home network from work, this also allows me to setup a VPN and access work from home. DynDNS also allows me to host a basic web server for images I use on forums etc (running a web server is against the T&C's though).

Sky T&Cs prohibit use for business purposes which is presumably the reason you want to get through your work's firewall.

When we signed up with Sky Broadband, we specifically stated that we work from home. Is that against their T&C? I work for a company based elsewhere, and my missus is self employed.

When it works, it's great. When it doesn't, NTL / VM support really suck!
Don't really need WiFi? Consider HomePlug (www.solwise.co.uk)

Lovely - so their sales people don't even know their own T&C.

Sky Max user, OK so far but only been 48 hours!

Their sales people are not buying the product - you are. It's not the sales person's job to read the small print on your behalf.

Fair enough if I hadn't specificaly told them we were working from home, and they said that was OK. If they had said "sorry, you can't do that", then I would have gone elsewhere.

When we were with NTL, they had a similar condition but said it only referred to having several people working from a single connection - home workers was OK. Wasn't set in stone, but was to make sure all their business customers didn't go for the residential option.

Well, as far as I can see, Sky haven't actually told you that you can't use your connection for working from home. You just can't have a static IP. The Sky service is designed for the average home-user, so it's "no frills", because the average Joe Public doesn't need them.
