Any BT Engineers Out There??? Attenuation 60Db!!!

Hi, folks,

Please have a look at other posts, Monday 19th March 2007.

I'm now trying to ascertain, whether my Low Speed of 1.1 Meg is a Cabling Issue as i have a Attenuation of 60Db.

So Any Current or Past BT Engineers, please feel free to comment as to whether, this could be a Cabling Issue!

I have Adsl Filter, plugged into master socket where RJ11 goes straight to Router!

I live 2.5 Km from Kingsmead exchange, ie. about 2 miles! According to various tests, the exchange is NOT Congested!

Would i still have this Speed issue, if it was a case i went away to another provider, like BE unlimited, as opposed to Sky!

Sky reckon Max Connection is 2.5 to 3 Meg for where i live!!

So the gauntlet is Open!!!

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1184 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 60.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 17.1 db 13.0 db

Router is Brand new Netgear 108Mbps


Sky Broadband Mid - Up to 8 Mps
Kingsmead, Bath Exchange

1400 Mhz Processor,
512Mb Ram
Netgear Router 108Mps

with an attenuation of 60 you are somewhat limited

your SNR seems high for a rate adaptive product (IMO) but it could be set that high because of stability problems.

to be honest 1meg plus with 60 attenuation seems ok, with the SNR i would guess you could maybe double it if you are lucky, but may do so at the risk of instability.

Cant see you getting 3meg to be honest

Kingsmead exchange rings bells for an exchange with long line lengths, where are you in Bath roughly? A street name should be enough to take a look.

The river and geography tends to lead to longer than expected line lengths.

You could run at 2.4Mbps if you took the gamble of running on a 6dB noise margin.

I am using the Sky DG834GT router on my line which has high line attenuation. I am on the Sky LLU "Max" connection:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2880 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 7.0 db 14.0 db

It is worth bearing in mind that any line length/attenuation issues are really due to BT wiring (taking geography into account) - Sky has simply taken over the line.

I have been very careful with the internal telephone wiring in my house so I have a faceplate filter from AdslNation, shielded RJ11 cable to the router and minimal internal telephone wiring.

I apologise for flipping out, see previous post!!! Exchange - value for money Wanted!

In answer to you question, I live on a Hill, overlooking the city, in a suburb called Southdown near Twerton. This is 2.5 Km in a straight line. A distance of 2 miles.
Road is Roundhill Grove , Bath BA2 1JT

Would it be justified to expect a high attenuation, for such a short distance! i don't know!

Its overhead cabling locally. My question would be, would i still have such issues, if i swapped to 'Be Unlimited' or is it the type of equipment they are using at 'Kingsmead'?

You would stil have the problem.

The line can take a route anywhere, so 2.5km is (I imagine) the straight line distance, it could divert past Taunton first (slight exaggeration but you get the point)

I doubt BE would supply a service on 60 attention, IIRC they will also supply it on short lines.

Be wont give you a service on a line with these sort of parameters

The exchange is at BA1 2AL and the best route the AA gives is 2.4 miles long i.e. 4km, then allow a bit of extra due to BT not being able to give everyone the shortest possible cable route and you will have 5 or more kilometeres of copper cable and thus your 60dB attenuation.

In short your low speeds are a factor of your location, the map does show something of a rabbit warren with lots of different options for cable routing.

So in short you need to move to the other side of the river or a lot closer to it to shortern your cable length.

Hi,

So your on Max package, with high Attenuation, with 2.8 Meg!

Where is your location, in comparison to your exchange? distance in miles approx?

Were you on a lower package before?

According to the DSLZone checker, I am 4.2Km from the exchange "as the crow flies".

In reality, the line length is 5.5km approx (according to BT) as the cabling loosely follows the road network here and the map "as the crow flies" is directly across a farmer's field currently full of sheep!

The bottom line is that you are very much at the mercy of how BT has cabled your telephone line. I am connected to the exchange 4.2Km away but have a different BT exchange only 1.5Km maximum away...

It may also be worth pointing out that my house/wiring is only about 20 years old.

I would recommend you concentrate on your in-house wiring, use a good faceplate flter, disconnect the ring wire if connected (a BT engineer disconnected mine when I first got ADSL 512K a few years ago) and then ask Sky to remove the cap on the line.

I just got activated today

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 768 / 3,776

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 31.5 / 60.5

But seems to be a bit slow sometimes not sure if its my wireless or DNS or what :/ Download speeds are 200+ but websites seem to be taking a while to load.
