My parents are on Sky Max and get the following stats:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5312 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 43 db 12 db
Noise Margin 7 db 13 db


Should they be getting better lines than this?

Yes, a 43dB would normally give in excess of 10Mbps.

They probably do have a master socket (it's quite rare to have the entire phone wiring going back to one of those old hard-wired junction boxes).
What I guess you mean is they don't have the type of master with an internal test socket.
In which case, there's not much they can do.
Are all the extensions hard-wired into the back of the master (or other sockets), or do they plug into the front of the master?

According to this checker http://212.23.23.177/ADSL/default.aspx the speeds aren't too bad for that attenuation.

What speed do they want?

They don't want anything particular; they only use it for general surfing.

Just thought they would get a better speed that all

Noise margin varies from 9.3 to 8.1 depending on time of day. Worth pushing Sky for ADSL2+, would you say? never have been sure what constitutes conditions good enough for ADSL2+

The speed you get on any line is dependent on both attenuation and line noise. Having a low attenuation won't give high speeds if the line noise is high.
