Strange disconnects

[link to this post]

I have discovered why my connection drops, it is really weird and some insight would be welcome for when I phone sky. Basically, my neigbour has sky when he starts his router up my connection between the router and sky drops - we then play "lets sync" for as long as it takes for one of us to become cheesed-off and turns the router off.

My neigbnour has just gone out for the last 3 hours and his router is off ( i can tell that becuase he luckily transmits his ssid with the sky format (for example, skyxxx) - strangley enough my connection is rock solid as it was when i was using it first thing this morning before he switched his router on.

As anyone else come across this behaviour and what if could be causing it? Sky's tech help solution to any problem is just to cap you by whopping-off another 1mb of sync - hardly the solution to the problem as it didn't fix it anyway!!

I take it that it's the wireless you are talking about. If so the try changing the channel, can't remember which is the default channel however 1, 6 and 11 are the ones to try.

it has nothing to do with the wireless or any type of connection to my pc as it is the router that looses the connection with sky - you don't work for sky tech support do you :-)

Try making your post a bit clearer.

Post your line stats when you can connect without issue and also stats when you have an issue.

RE: Try making your post a bit clearer.

Try reading it - it clearly said the connection between the router and sky

Hi

Sounds like cross talk problem. Are both of you ever able to sync at the same time? When they upped your SNR, did your neighbours also go up?

If the answer is NO it is probably a problem at the exchange, and your lines are both connecting back to the same port rather than you each having your own connection at the Sky equipment.

You need to post some stats as that may help prove a wiring problem.

Regards

Phil

Be nice or people won't help you.
Does sound like a wireless issue as this only happens when your neighbours box is on.

OK - then tell me how the wireless connection between the router and the pc has any influence on the router's connection with the isp?

As far as being nice goes you are absolutely correct - but i wasn't the one that critisised the post wrongly anyway, i just replied to it in the same spirit that it was made.

Phil

Sounds like we may be getting somewhere here... here are my stats when i'm currently connected.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2880 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 59.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 12.8 db 11.0 db

It may be difficult to get them when i'm disconnected but i will try and post some more immediately afterwards if you think that would help

I'm not able to comment on my neigbours stats as this possible link didn't come to light until today and sky put back my speed so i've no idea if my neigbours snr changed up and down as well

A couple of quick questions (which may well not quick answers): -

Does the same happen if your neighbour switches his router on first & gets connected, does he lose sync if you then turn on your router. That to my mind would definitely suggest a cross-talk problem (split pairs?). It might be worth checking if other neighbours are having problems with broadband too, which would suggest either a wider line problem or RF noise being the culprit - see below.

On a different tangent, does your neighbour's router have a "wall wart" external power supply? if yes, what happens if he powers that up without it being connected to the router? If that affects your sync then it is most likely to be RF interference from the power supply being faulty that is affecting your broadband (& almost certainly his too). If no effect I would then suggest powering the router up while disconnected from the phone line to eliminate that as a source of RF interference. Then try swapping routers in case it IS still RF interference but just down the phone line rather than "broadcast"
