Cancelling SKY BB???

My daughter took the SKY package, Sat+BB+Phone. But after nearly 10 days (the DLM time), the BB speeds are appaling. Facebook pages take minutes to load, YouTube etc is not useable, nor are any pages which use flash extensively. TV stuff no good at all, and we haven't even tried the Xbox Live stuff.

Connected to Master socket, no extensions. Filters all correct.

attn: 61 db nm: 7db d/l connection speed 2 megs-ish

Similar line nearby gets 5 megs with O2 (with nm down to 3db)


Should she get rid of the BB and phone?

What's the attenuation of the nearby line?

What's the point of comparing speeds w/out the attenuation, no matter how close it seems?

61dB attenuation then sorry but 2 to 3Mbps is the best you will get from any provider.

How nearby is this other line, its attenuation would neeed to be in the 48 to 54dB range to stand a chance of 5Meg, and a 3dB margin is not suitable for all lines.

So less Sky's problem, but more a factor of your location and the telephone line length.

And more importantly, what did Sky estimate her speed to be prior to ordering?

Ask to be put on G.DMT it will be faster than ADSL2+ at that attenuation

I would of suggested trying a better/different router, but as it will be fully llu'd (phone & bb) theres little chance that would work as they use MER instead of PPoA , if you can get routerstats or dmt to work with the sky router you may be able to lower the downstream snr level to 3db. which might give you a 4-5mbit sync, but it maybe problematic , so easiest is to ask them to change the modulation to G.dmt as already suggested

Hi all, (and only ONE daughter!!!)

Sky were Ok about cancelling and moved to Plusnet who said they would give it a bash with a lower NM than SKY would (they would not set it below 7db).

Also, Plusnet will be doing an FTTC product for our area around December, so they are on their list to be upgraded when the time comes.

So, all's well that ends well, if they get the same or more than the SKY rate!

They use both, PPPoA has not been disabled on Sky's network.

This is correct! If I use my Sky supplied Dlink router it first connects with pppoa and then switches to MER. If I use my own router it connects with pppoa and stays there
