ADSL2+ Upgrade - Sync speeds

[link to this post]

Hello,

I've been upgraded to ADSL2+; my upstream sync speed has risen but no changes to my downstream speed. Is there a training period like ADSL Max?

Here's the line quality specs from my router:

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin : 11.5 9.0 db
Line Attenuation : 32.0 22.3 db
Data Rate : 6692 888 kbps

Your quickest answer to your query is to phone A&A support on 03333 400 999
My calls to support have been answered both quickly and helpfully.

Cheers

I have been having a nightmare with sync speeds which just keep tumbling until I'm locked into BRAS=8000 despite the fact my modem regularly reports attainable downstream syncs of 17636000 bps. I used to get 1.5Mbps downloads consistently when I was a Be* customer, but A&A have been disastrous for me so far. Endless disconnections, reboots and tiresome mails to Support with no real resolution.
I wish I'd never bothered quite honestly. Now I feel sorry for people who have "bad" BT lines, because mine is of fairly good quality and this is the nonsense I get.

Am I misreading your figures?

Your previous download speed with Be* sounds low when compared to your BRAS of 8000 kbps

What A&A service are you on?

Cheers.

Sorry

I got 1.5MBps with Be*

It's the usual confusion

bps, kbps Kbps Mbps MBps

It's been a long day. I'm bored of this.

I'm going offline now - unplugging for the night; it won't make any difference, obviously

Yes, that's normal for 21CN. But they'll tell you it's a line fault, or your equipment is incompatible.
I've seen it happening with the router supplied by AAISP, so maybe they are providing incompatible equipment?
I am now with Be* and get faster *upload* than I used to get download with AAISP (AAISP: 1152/448 - unfortunately I am not joking; Be: 17247/1840). So much for the line being faulty.

edit - and I haven't had a single network problem since migration. Before I couldn't even keep an ssh session open because the line was up and down so much.

None of this surprises me, but I don't think I have anywhere left to go now. I left Be* because of massive latency on the network, appalling DNS and web pages taking minutes to open, despite http downloads being fine. Their customer services and tech support is perfectly horrible (Bulgaria) and the IWF / Wikipedia debacle where they blocked a page, and "pretended" it was a 404 annoyed me intensely.

Now I know deep down A&A are fine, but they are clearly being let down by BT's dreadful 21CN.

The problem is 21cn is a trainwreck. I got 8128/832 on IPStream.. now on 6656/432 on 21cn/ADSL2. A&A are good enough to periodically reset the SNR but BT keep setting it back again - currently stuck on 15db. I got tired of asking and gave up ages ago.

A&A really do try but they're up against BT who are a bunch of clowns rolling out beta quality services.

Totally agree: 21CN is a complete mess, and that's probably an understatement.
However, I am unconvinced by statements such as the following, which I received from AAISP's support:
"I am not sure what disadvantage there is being on WBC, it is actually cheaper than the service you currently have"
I'd rather pay more for a working service.

Well I moved from an LLU service and I was charged a connection fee for the "privilege" of moving to 21CN with a downgrade to half the speed my line can consistently support with another ADSL2+ provider. I also didn't qualify for any free equipment and was seriously harassed into sending my BeBox back after about 30 minutes of cancelling with Be*. It's just as well I'd already purchased my own ADSL2+ modem.

I will definitely be demanding the connection fee back, and will be going straight to OTELO if this is not resolved by my next billing period which is 1st February.
