BT's FUP

[link to this post]

Keep getting calls from BT along the lines of have I heard about their new service ? actually had it installed a few weeks before their first offer smile

The service is apparently unlimited, unless you go over the FUP which is either 100 or 300 GB and then the 55 mb line will drop to 0.5 mb for the rest of the month as punishment

During that time, the service will not be any use for streaming music, films or playing online games

BT sales guy was apparently not aware of the issue or implications...

plus they ban various torrent sites even if those sites are offering music promoted by the artists in a bid to get more exposure...

Did you carry on the conversation in a way to establish which service the spamming caller was actually going to try to sell you?

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,website and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet Extra Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 54.0/14.9Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

had a 10 min chat with the guy, he had never come across BT nerfing anyone's connection and was interested to find out

the speed increase from 35 to 55 mb would be of interest

the likely drop after the 1st, maybe the 2nd week to 0.5 mb as a "punishment" is not of interest

You've lost me completely. Not only do I not know what "nerfing" means, it begins to sound as if you aren't aware he was talking utter balderdash. I thought your opening post was making a joke about the lunacy of what he said. Now I'm not so sure you were.

Years ago they had a 100GB FUP. That was upped to 300GB. That was removed and it went unlimited download GBs in April 2011.

Gamer talk! Doesn't realise we're not all gamers.

Was he spammed? I read it that he gets BT sales calls, talking rubbish, after he'd already joined them, but he's not very clear frown

See my first reply to him. It had to be a spammer for something, or else a mammoth cockup by whoever employs him to push BT.

There is no 'new' service - the salesman was referring to BT Infinity. Try and keep up tongue

BT use call center staff (their own and outsourced) to call up people and ask them if they have heard of their new service in areas where Fibre (ie in this case BT Infinity) has been deployed.

I was called about it shortly after my cabinet was enabled, but as I wanted to try and negotiate to keep the discount I already had I declined to deal with someone who wouldn't have had the power to discuss this.

In the end I did get a discount on my FTTC connection, but not at the previous level - which was fair enough given what I gained smile

I was not attempting to 'answer for the OP'

I was just trying to be helpful and answer your question from my reading of his original post.

That's the whole nature of Forums.

Carry on as you were.

Not what was said by the sales guy in the original post smile

If you want to read what the T's and C's are for BT Infinity I suggest you go to bt.com and read up about it. I'm going to bed!

Why am I doing this?

Yes, I know there is no FUP on Infinity (other than throttling of p2p in peak times).

That is why what the sales guy was saying to the OP was complete and utter rubbish.

Now do you understand?

And assuming the caller was really from BT, which has not been verified. Given the amount of misinformation in the OP, to me that seems unlikely, but we have no indication from the OP that the post was tongue-in-cheek.

Also given the OP's ISP, which I too noticed long before it was flagged up, it is possible he believed the misinformation and was himself slagging off BT Retail.

''Hello, this is BT. Are you aware of the new service we are providing in your area" was how the phone call started that I received.. I know of 2 other people who received similar calls, both on BT Broadband, as they rang me for advice about Infinity (as the person who looks after their PCs). One has stayed on adsl 2, the other is being discussed in the fibre forum (two engineers no show.........)

I'm inclined to agree that the OP was using his mis-information (from where-ever it came) to try and denigrate BT. I somehow doubt we will be hearing from him again about it.

If you read the end of his sig it says
Merula FTTC

I had a look at their FTTC offerings and the premium service has a guide limit of only 200GB, has a static IP, no throttling/shaping and is £40/month Ex VAT. (For the 80/20 service)

BT -> Zen -> F2S -> Bulldog -> Be* -> BT Infinity 2
