BT Traffic shaping

Is it just me or are BT shaping traffic on newsgroups, IRC and torrent? I am getting slow speeds on every one of them.

I would concur regarding IRC & Torrents.

Well, a few days ago, I looked at BT's website and they say that BT does not perform traffic shaping of any form, so I dont know if they are or not, but I will concede that ares isnt as fast with BT as it was with Orange, and I have only been with BT for 4 days.

They definitely do it with torrents. A while ago I would hit 600kb/s no problem. Now I'm lucky to see 50 and that's with a plentiful supply of seeds and peers. 30-45kb/s.

Newsgroups don't appear to be throttled on my connection.

I haven't been throttled.

My torrents max out (420KB/s) when using my private trackers.

Edit:- I do use encryption so I don't know whether this will stop me from being throttled.

Yeah, encryption gets past the throttling but doesn't appear to work on my home connection. It does on the one at work, but that is on ukonline, they throttle aswell.

Just use encryption and you can get near full speeds again in the evenings...

depends on the number of peers on the torrent also supporting encryption - if its low to none you will see little if any increase in speed, if its a private torrent with a lot of peers also using encryption then you could theoretically max out your connection.

Is there any way to encrypt all traffic?

Only way would be to setup a VPN (or similiar encrypted tunnel) to a remote proxy, the options are to either host one yourself on a dedicated server or use one of the companies providing such a service - neither option is cheap.
