BT's FUP

Does anybody have any more information about BT's FUP what do they do, is p2p or capping on some people and how much do they lower the speed by?

someone aught to work the speed caps if they can. its just gone 21:20 and my peer to peer speed has gone up from 25k to 50k around 11-12 its uncapped untill 6ish the next day. for me atleast!

haha just after posting that at 21:25 that amazing burst of speed is over and its back down to 25k. i cant believe to download a few songs i have to wait half a hour!

I always wonder what is the point in 8mb MAX if you can never get the use of your true speed! Why can information going through a server cost money?? It's only data at the end of the day! Then ADSL2 up to 24mb still with 1mb download speed we have got that to look forward to. Defeats the purpose of broadband we are so far behind the rest of the world. It should be free and be used to it's potential!

I can live with it been on p2p, but on FTP, IMAP and HTTP I need not to be capped, however it does seem that BT do not do that,

yeah it really begs the question! i know http/ftp and off peak p2p is faster comapred to my old 2mb line but seen as its put me on a 16db margin i only see 3.5mb and it really isnt worth the stupidly low cap i could get the same speed with 256k. not to mention lower pings on fast path!

Simply becuase someone has to pay for the infrastructure needed for that piece of data from your pc to the server and vice versa.

Theres all sorts of peering agreements involved with different companies owing the various different networks your packet of data will travel across to reach its destination.

Fibre might be capable of several of taking several hundred Gibabits+ but at the end of the day the data can only go as fast as the bit of kit on the end of the fibre can send/recieve it, it all boils down to cost.

Someone has to pay for the equipment used to transfer the data also the equipment is somewhat expensive so its not like they can afford to replace it eveytime a new bit of kit comes out just becuase its a little bit faster.



Im sure you could get 8mbit MAX speed all to yourself if your prepared to pay for the pipe between you and your destination (and we're talking a large amount here...)

Why should everyone else suffer [censored] speeds just becuase 1 person happens to want to use bittorent all the time, broadband is only available at the prices it is becuase the service is contended.

Of course Communcations providers still need to invest in new tech to keepup with demand, but my point is as nice as 8mbit + all to myself would be its certianlly not affordable.

Like most people i don't like the idea of traffic shaping and fair use policys but i accept it as needed to stop a few people from hogging all the bandwidth.

byte Interleaving uses powerfull error correction techniques to keep the number of errors down and therefore allows your line to gain faster speeds without erroring to serverly.

However it does increase ping time a little bit

you can ask for them to turn it off on your line and they should honor the request.

Not sure if it will effect your overall speed or not though.
