Where are these routers?

Tracert to BBC

None of the hops number 2 to 7 resolve to anyone.....seems to be alot of hops to BBC? With a previous ISP, I only saw about 5 or 6

It's BT's regional network. Before your previous ISP was not big enough to merit having such a large network. I imagine your last ISP was just straight to their gateway in London.

Only two ISP's who are big enough to have networks like this are BT and NTL.

Yeah...I thought that was the case, but was surprised they didn't resolve..or so I thought 'til given a link to a decent reverse DNS page!

sorry for bumping an old thread but I was searching for something and saw this.

What it actually is that most ISPs use L2TP Central Pipes. L2TP actually tunnels data, therefore although you will in relatity still traverse these exact same hops.. they are just hidden when you use an ISP using their own L2TP centrals.

On Central Plus the gateway address is the RAS - on most other ISPs the ISP central becomes the gateway. There are a few ISPs (such as namesco) that still use some of the really old style classic 155Mb centrals on which their customers will still see these hops.

Light... I think that would have to be a book of Cisco router commands. It is only a few thousand pages!!
