Home hub

[link to this post]

For 4/5 months now I have been suffering sync problems with my hub, spending many hours speaking to our friends in India. I have now contacted head office and now high level complaints are dealing with it.

Yesterday BT Ireland rang me having taken over my problem (2nd level complaints?)

My normal connection rate is 5920 with an IP profile of 5000. Frequently the IP profile drops overnight to 3000 and sticks at this for 3 days or weeks if I am unlucky. I use the test socket.

1 new hub later(Worse) and and an engineer visit nothing has changed. The Bt Irish dept. suspect an exchange fault. The engineer did get a faster connection with his voyager 2091

A 220V router is being sent to try. Not ideal, but with a WAP in series they say it will meet my needs. If it cures the problem.

I use BT Talk and a wireless connection.

I am ringing customer options next week to "Have a go" or I will be off elsewhere.

Any suggestions, as I see I am not alone in this.

Sound like a line fault to me. Is part of your line poled or is it all underground? If its poled and as it happens at night it could be caused by the poled section picking up HF transmissions. Just a guess but the problem fits.

No all line is below ground. We live on a newish estate so it new wiring on the estate and 1.5 miles to the estate from the exchange

Your saying you are connected to the test socket all the time?

In your home hub go into advanced, then login using the username and password "admin"
Once in down the side go to status.
Then ADSL Line
Then more info or what ever is directly below ADSL line to the side a bit.

That is your line stats post them when it goes down to around 3000 and when it is up at 8000. Got an idea of what is causing your problems.

Thanks Paul,

Will do that and post to you. Of course today it is fine yesterday , first thing it was down to 3000 A reboot of hub and 2 hours later it resynced correctly.

May take a while as it is so unpredictable. This week it was Ok for 4 days before going west.

Sounds like a similar issue to what I dealt with, same circumstances. Syncing at nearly 8000 and then dropping down to 2000. Turns out the home hub was getting a ridiculously high SNR margin on the downstream causing such a low sync speed. This may be solved by either a new hub or the pending firmware upgrade. You will soon know the fault with the 220v which they are sending out if it does the same it could be line related if not then its the hub with either one of those options I said before.

Ok, do not understand the technichal bit at all. I have got origanil hub and a replacement. The original works best, that has 6226. the new one 611 whatever. So both home hubs are affected.

Is that what you are inferring , that the current hub and firmware is subect to this problem. Before the hubs I used a small bt wireless router(2091 0r 2100 In think). I gave that away to my daughter, but at the time I had been on max for a month without problems, albeit at a lower rate. Bt must have tweaked things since.

The other thing i forgot to mention, was BT turned of interleaving. This gave a speed increase, but I cannot say if the problem existed prior to that. They suggested it.
Is it worth getting them to turn it back on or does it hit performance too much

Or should I just wait and try the 220V

Interleaving does not affect everyday browsing, interleaving changes the way data is transmitted on your line when it changes the way the data is sent over your line it slow it down. This causes lag. We are talking about milliseconds of a slowdown here.

There is also a technical speed limit on how fast your line can go with interleaving 7xxxkbps I have forgotten at the moment.

What I recommend is to see how this 220v goes and if it cures the problem then I think it could be what I mentioned earlier with the margins. But without any line statistics it is very hard to see if that is even the case.

My broadband is ok at the moment. My current connection is:-5920 with an IP profile of 5000. . This is the normal connection giving a 5mbit download rate. When the problem crops up the ipprofile drops to 2500/3000.
The current stats are:-Link Information

Uptime: 1 day, 9:59:41

Modulation: G.992.1 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 5,920

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/GB]: 142.07 / 2.48

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11.5 / 19.0

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 27.0 / 46.0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 22.0 / 6.0

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ALCB

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote): 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 416 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 26,396

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 13,560

I agree I will await the 220V and see what happens. I will however contact customer options for some form of recompence
