SMTP

Hello All

I am trying to find out if i can use the BT smtp relays to send my mail when i am out and about like in a hotel or coffe shop. Would this work for me BT account and my Work account. My work account i use IMAP but have not got an SMTP server in work.

Your work should have an SMTP server especially if their mail is hosted e.g. 1and1.

Pretty sure BT's SMTP servers can be used out with as they are authenticated but somebody will clarify this.

i use my own smtp server on my laptop and home pc it works well where ever you can pick up a wireless connection, the benefit is added privacy as all out going emails go straight to the persons pop3 inbox and no copy is therefore kept on your isp's smtp server.

i recommend the free version 2.6 of postcast smtp server - its a older version but does everything you could want as a user. its available here http://www.postcastserver.com/download/release.aspx?p=3

you have the option after install to set your smtp server to work with your email programme (outlook express/thunderbird etc) or you can use postcast as a stand alone email client by clicking new and entering the address in manually, obviously you cant get your email through postcast as it a smtp email server.

in standalone mode you can put in the from field any email address you wish as its not authorised by your isp's smtp server -your server accepts all outgoing names you could wish for ! which if your 14yr old get hold of it he'll be sending all his mates emails from tom dick and harry in the from box.!!!

so yes this will do the job you want in hotels and cafes with a wifi connection and you can then send no problems. and get your imap incoming online.

Im curious - how would the privacy angle of this stand up to the Profiling of all traffic through your connection by Phorm? (assuming you were opted in - or believed thier "non profile of opted out traffic" line)

Given the attitude of some ISPs to our private data (they see it as an asset they can sell) its something I have wondered about - if All traffic is routed through a data raping system, there has to be some degree of ability to anaylise and profile emails too.

Could you not use your mail hosts SMTP server, it will probably provide more anti-spam benefits for the receiver e.g. false positives than using an SMTP relay or setting up your own SMTP server as its unknown to the other mail hosts.

how would i go about doing that then as i host the mail

Where do you host the mail? Is it with a company e.g. BT, 1and1, Fasthosts, Star etc or does your company host it themselves.
