Massive Speed drop

[link to this post]

I noticed a few weeks back that i couldnt seem to get faster than 50kb/sec download speeds, but i just put this down to it being peak times and thought nothing further off it. This went on for a few weeks, of similar download speeds and struggle to stream and sort of media i finally checked my router settings

Linksys WAG354G

DSL Status: Up
DSL Modulation Mode: GDMT
DSL Path Mode: FAST
Downstream Rate: 608 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 448 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 18 db
Upstream Margin: 23 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 44
Upstream Line Attenuation: 29
Downstream Transmit Power: 0
Upstream Transmit Power: 0

Now i cant remeber exact numbers from before - but my downstream rate was definatly over 2000 and i was downloading at over 200kb/sec
And from what i can tell this SNR and attenuation is perfectly acceptable and should be able to cope with the speeds i previously had.

So why would this have dropped? Is there something i can do? is it something BT have done?

And is there any point in me phoning BT?

Thanks

The OP's issues are line related as you can see by the 600k sync and the 44db downstream line attenuation.

Where is your router plugged into, is it the master socket? If not plug it into there and see if the issue continues, disconnect all extensions from it beforehand. If its still the same after you have done this, change your microfilter and see if the sync increases.

Remember I am only interested in the sync speed not any online speed test.

ok plugged in the bthomehub to the test socket, and the sync speed was 3700k (approx) but still the bt speedtester said IP profile off 500k still.

changed back to the linksys and it now says 3700k sync speed but bt speedtester still 500k

i havent had speeds this low in about 4 years

hehe nope.

Right after getting annoyed i decided to phone BT (longest 20 minutes of my life)
They got me to use the BThomehub, plug it into my test socketand move it beside the socket.
All of which id tried before, but i thought doing it when they tell me when save them questioning me further.

After all that they told me there seems to be a problem - that my Ip profile is only 500k (coulda saved 20 minutes if they beleived me to begin with)
So they reported a fault with my line....

So I reconnect back to my old router and moved it all back to normal - 30 minutes later sync speed is back up to 3488 and downloading at 340kb/sec

so....coincidence? or was the problem that easy to fix?

Coincidence.

When you connected your router into the master socket you eliminated all your extensions. This got you synced back up at a higher speed of 37xx forgot the last two numbers. By the time you got round to phoning BT and coming off the phone with them, RAMBO at the exchange detected your increased sync speed and adjusted your IP Profile to match.

You calling BT and moving the router back made no odds, you could have saved yourself the 20 minutes on the phone and it would still have done the same. THD couldn't have got Wholesale to reset the profile that quickly.

As for the cause of the problem, looks like you have a dodgy extension which you might want to check which one. Its introducing a lot of noise to your line slowing your broadband down.

Afraid the problem this time was all yours it seems.
