BT Yahoo Security Update

Here we go again!

Another period of great inconvenience but at least there is some warning....

However, why are we restricted to just 10 addresses without going through some convoluted process to be able to use more?

10 email addresses or 10 IP addresses?

Will be 10 e-mail addresses for the BT Yahoo webmail setting.

Personally I don't see an issue with this, people moan and complain about spam but don't want to do anything about it. All BT want is a human to verify e-mail addresses that are going via their SMTP server. If users have such a problem go get a e-mail host and stop leaching.

Then again you can turn the table on those using computers who don't know what they are doing with their outdated anti virus and poor security measures that have viruses and worms installed on their computer sending these e-mails.

BT Business have been doing this for years if the domain isn't verified and its a damn sight harder to verify the domain with them than logging into a webmail and typing in one or two addresses.

Sorry but I have no sympathy for those sending mail with different from fields via BT's SMTP server. Out of 4 million customers I cant see many customers being affected and the amount of spam which will be cut by doing this is going to be measurable. I only wish comcast, Time Warner, Road Runner and sever other large US ISP's would do the same.

In fact BTYahoo email already has authenticated SMTP which effectively stops the spam zombies for using their servers. So this additional step in reality does zilch.

I am one of the many who are affected. I have my own domain but no hosting with my provider - my domain mail is redirected to my btinternet inbox. Countless others have alias addresses and would like to have that appear in their From box. When it was first introduced earlier in the year they were rather surprised at the uproar caused, it affects far more than the small number you suggest.

Unfortunately it is going to cause problems for many of the non computer literate for no real benefit.

To be clear. I do a considerable amount of voluntary work (from home) so have to 'adopt' an email address associated with the organisation with which I'm working - e.g. treasurer@......

For the charity it means when office bearers change there is no wholesale notification required as the same address continues to be used for that role. This system also provides a measure of privacy for volunteers as the Outlook signature need only contain the Charity's main contact details.

I am associated with a larger number than the meagre allowance decided by BT so, while all can be directed to download to one account, it appears I'll have to generate sub-accounts and change over to send emails from them, perhaps having to copy and paste important bits of text and keep two windows open to ensure accuracy.

This facility to ensure only genuine emails get into the system is welcome but, as noted before, all ISPs need to do the same.

Not nessisarily if you have the zombie sending it using the default mail app which is configured to access and send mail via BT then it can be a issue.

I can see where it will be troublesome for you doves. You could try using Gmail or similar with the sending from address. It's not really reccomended now to send mail from unauthorised SMTP servers. If they have a domain why not suggest using Live for Domains or Google Apps.

Spam is a big problem and the practises you carry out aren't exactly the best nor on the charities or organisations concerned.

As for the uproar you have to take a hit to try and ease the problem. This is really the sign of things to come as spam becomes an ever increasing problem. Just ask my Yahoo inbox!
