BT HH forgets username and password

[link to this post]

Does anyone know how to make the username and password "stick" in the BT HH?

I have had several drops recently due to storms and the HH does not reconnect. On investigation, I find the username and password fields are blank. Filling these in resolves the problem.

Is this just a firmware issue or is there a secret way of making the HH remember the username and password?

Strange, have you tried a factory reset?

Yes, done a factory reset.

Had a few problems since switching to the HH after a very stable connection for a long time on a Linksys WAG54G. Using HH because it came free with a hub phone and reduction in monthly fee for a renewal.

Initially did not realise that the HH had dropped the user name and password. Called BT ("oop narth" replied, not India) and very helpful techie pointed me to re-inserting the user name and password.

I have now had three drop-offs in as many days and have had to reinsert the user name and password each time; have definitely ticked the "remember" box on each occasion.

Beginning to wonder whether I have a duff HH . . .

The BT mail/account user name and password are not actually required for logon adsl service with BT, the authorisation is set for your phone line. I just remembered that...... Im not sure why you cant get service.

Many folks just put [email protected] with no password, in other words [email protected], give it a try.

Unless you are talking about your HH admin access login and password???

The techie I spoke to suggested using the mail log-on with the password to authenticate rather that the more usual "[email protected]" without a password as initially the HH would not log back on again using the standard log-in.

I can get service OK, but the hub keeps forgetting the user name and password.

No further problems so far . . .

I see, a most odd and peculiar issue, probably corrupt software then, can you reflash it with the BT utility on the hubs cd?

There does not seem to be any kind of Utility on the BT HH Disk.

Is there any way of re-flashing the hub firmware? The firmware is currently at version 6.2.6.E

'scuse the long paste

1. Connect your computer to Hub via Ethernet1 socket. The upgrade should not be attempted from a wireless PC or Ethernet2 socket.
2. Click on 'Start' in your computer.
3. Select 'Run'.
4. Type 'cmd' on the run dialog box. A black window will popup called as command window.
5. Type 'ipconfig'.
6. Press 'Enter' button.
7. Now in the results, please check for the following information:

* IP Address: 192.168.1.100
* Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
* Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254

Note: If you can find the above information you can proceed to step 18. If you are unable to view the above information, you have to manually force the IP address by the following steps 8 to 17.

8. Go to the 'Start' menu, then 'Settings' or 'Control Panel' and then 'Network Connections'.
9. Under 'Local Area Network', right-click the Ethernet adapter (ensure the correct adapter is selected if several are listed), then click on 'Properties'.
10. Select the 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)' and click on 'Properties'.
11. Select 'Use the following IP address:' radio button.
12. Enter IP address: as, 192.168.1.100
13. Enter the Subnet mask: as, 255. 255. 255.0
14. Enter the Default gateway: as, 192.168.1.254
15. The 'Use the following DNS server addresses:' radio button should be selected.
16. Enter the 'Preferred DNS' server: as 192.168.1.254
17. Click on the 'OK' button to confirm the settings.

Note: Following steps will upgrade the firmware.

18. Insert the CD you have with BT Hub on the CD ROM drive. (Do not allow it to run automatically).
19. Right click the 'BT Total Broadband' icon in 'My Computer' and select 'explore'.
20. Select the 'Utils' folder and click on it.
21. Select 'Upgrade Wizard' and double click on it. Then click on 'UpgradeBT' folder.
22. Now double click on the 'upgradeBThub.exe' file. You will get a screen 'BT Home Hub Upgrade Wizard'. Click on 'Next'.
23. A screen with 'Software License Agreement' will appear. Click 'Yes'. A screen with 'BT Home Hub Detection' will appear.
24. If the hub is not detected please follow the steps to set the Home Hub in recovery mode:

* Close the firmware wizard.
* Press the wireless association button on the back of the hub.
* Keeping the wireless association button pressed unplug the power and wait for five seconds.
* Plug the power back.
* Release the wireless association button. This will set the Home Hub in recovery mode.

25. Now run upgrade wizard by following the steps 18 to 23. Please be informed that this needs to be carried out within 1.5 minutes.
26. Follow the onscreen instructions.

Note: During the process of upgrade, the installation wizard will ask for user name and password which should be entered as 'admin' and 'admin'. Click 'OK' to proceed.

27. In case you get a prompt, check the option 'Yes. I am sure and proceed with the process' and proceed with the installation.
28. The upgrade will take up to ten minutes during which the lights on the hub would flash. Click on 'Finish' button to end the upgrade process.

Note: Now wait for the hub to finish up its reboot sequence until the 'Data' and 'Wireless' lights turn solid green. If all the lights keep flashing for more than two minutes, it means the hub is being remotely upgraded during the reboot process. Once the hub has rebooted, reset the hub to factory defaults by pressing the 'Wireless Association' button for twenty seconds or until the wireless, phone, broadband and Internet light start glowing at once without blinking.

That is a very very odd bug that you have as the User Name is hard coded into the Home Hub and the Password is hard coded as null. Plus as has been said authentication is done on the line.

Finally how on earth did you manage to change those fields as they are hard coded and locked to a user.

Terry
