Would you recomend BT ???????????

I need help to change my provider.

Currently with Tiscali but need to change as fed up with their help desk and speaking to a script reader with no overall help.

I need to change as i can get BT option 1 over the 18 month contract for �9.93 a month with various discounts.

BUT is BT going to be any better for the money. I know i should change to a better provider (i had considered new net) but their charges for estimated 6-7 Gb a month is �18.

How do people rate BT for speed, reliablity, small amount of p2p, iplayer(bbc), etc.....

The only thing I could rate them on is reliability...

Speed wise you may or may not get throttled horribly (0.5mbit) during peak times ~6pm til midnight - outside of peak times speed is usually pretty good - this does not depend entirely on being a heavy user or not.

iplayer during peak times often continually stalls/reconnects - this is not a problem on the bbc end - still happens tho not so badly even if your not traffic managed to 0.5mbit.

Unless your a sucker for roulette I'd say STAY AWAY.

Have recommended them before and will happily do so again.

Speed I get from BT is excellent downloads usually go at full line speed which is a refreshing change from some Virgin Media ADSL and Tiscali lines I have used. Their reliability is great, cant remember the last time I was unable to use the internet.

P2P speeds for me are fine, I maybe use P2P twice a month I just leave the computer on downloading overnight and the speeds when I look back seem reasonable enough around 300k.

iPlayer I have no issues watching.

just wish they'd ease up on the traffic management a bit then I'd reccomend them - the reliability has been flawless - I've had more downtime on my dedicated server and that has a 99.99% SLA.

I don't mind if speeds drop a bit at peak times but hard capping at 0.5mbit in this day and age........................................

Not on my recommendation list usually due to poor help desk, many go to BT under belief as its the big group that support will be better, but far too often people are stuck with script robots and fighting the terminology

Agreed with Saffy & add to that long 18 month contract which is very hard to get out of if you find that the ISP isn't for you.

Traffic Management system is also in place on 'most' protocols, offshore support poor, UK support better (but still not the best & only get UK support if you're a Vision user).

I was with them 6+ years and left due to the changes set in place in 2007, I'm not bothered about watching TV programmes through a computer so found one of the few 'better' (IMO and many others) genuine ISPs that will go out of their way to help you if you ever need to speak to a human being at the other end of the telephone.

I haven't looked at Newnet, but they do have a good reputation & they don't get that by being cheap ala BT Openworld / Internet / Yahoo! / whatever they want to call themselves these days...

sorry should have mentioned my exchange has 1800 lines connected so no planned upgarde in the future
