Option 3 Capped at 17k

[link to this post]

Hi All,

I have option 3 BT broadband and I have apparently, according to the help desk been capped at 17k a sec .

They told me this happened because of excessive downloading.

Seems a bit harsh dontcha think ? its at 17k 24hours a day.

The irony is, I work from home FOR BT and its effecting my ability to work. Not really sure what to do now.. Any ideas ?

( ps I dont work in the broadband department )

Thanks
msh_anth.

Have you asked BT if they have a fair use policy.

The helpdesk is completely useless btw, they are just there to fob you off til you get bored and give up...

I'm not aware of any traffic management other than peak (~6pm til midnight) time on heavy users and P2P throttling on every body.

Right now it seems to be 2Mbit cap on HTTP, 0.025Mbit on P2P/unidentified (they are having a laugh) and 900kbit on certain products for video/media.

Some ISPs limit you to 128kbit/s if you exceed your monthly allowance which is ~16KB/s but I'm pretty sure BT don't do that.

Give www.speedtester.bt.com a whizz to check the IP Profile is not stuck low, and if BT is capping this should give a good result even then.

If that tester is slow and profile is good - then suggests heavy contention.

BT Wholesale when contention gets really bad, run a split what is available between the people, rather than letting the person with the most threads suck all the capacity.

If it was actually "roughly" 100gig that would be nice as we never exceed 100gig here except once accidentally when a script was left running while on holiday.

We rarely go much over 50gig - prolly 60 average and most of the time have been heavily capped in peak times.

Typical BT they spend a fortune on there [censored] tv adds but nothing on customer support or bandwidth.
They must be the worst bb provider in the uk.
I just feel sorry for anyone trapped in a contract with these parasites.
