FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[link to this post]

Steam updates during traffic managed peak times are knocking out ALL other browsing AGAIN...

They really need to sort this out once and for all or get rid of the traffic management...

Thinking on it... problem is lack of choices in my area*... the only real alternative is AAISP and not sure if we will fit into their useage pattern or not (something I'm looking into atm).

Also when we were put on "ADSL2+" recently I think they renewed the contract frown

* No cable, no proper LLU, talk talk have LLU presence but only ADSL MAX on IPStream, people in the same area on sky, o2, etc. (non LLU) have much higher ping times (30ms fastpath to first hop) than we do on BT (7ms fastpath to first hop) and as theres 2 people here that are online gamers this would not be acceptable.

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/WWYEOV

Neither of the LLU ISPs are really choices anyway and neither provide higher speeds than 8Mbit.

So the 2+ offering does not put you onto a less contended service? interesting to know!

The 2+ offering at entanet seem to give that impression (well to me anyway)

Permit me to differ... there are other excellent ISPs using IPStream.

As a mod I'm not in a position to recommend one over another, but I'll say this- you get what you pay for.

What's the contract, 12 months? Bit of a problem I'll concede... anything longer than one month wouldn't make it on to my long list, never mind the short one!

There are few other acceptable ISPs for this area I'm aware of...

People on the likes of UK Online using IPStream in this area are seeing very poor speeds at peak times (not sure if thats changed since the exchange was WBC enabled), worse even that my own, sky and O2 seem to have poor latency from this area and those kinda ping times would raise a riot.

Money isn't a problem as such, but neither are we going to pay over the odds.

I'm not sure where we are contract wise - when I had problems with getting the connection taken off interleaving mode recently at one point they put us through again as a "new" customer (which incidentally put us on ADSL2+) as we were so backed up in the oneview queue they couldn't do anything on the system with our connection... while strictly we shouldn't be a new customer arguing the toss over the contract is gonna be even more head banging.

Not sure what you mean... if you're on IPStream (ie you've got a BT line) you can get any of the IPStream ISPs...

Not all will offer ADSL2+ but I think quite a few do if your exchange is enabled, which I gather yours is.

We are on WBC and one of the first on the new ADSL2+ package...

What I mean is most ISPs even those offering ADSL2+ packages don't provide packages that are acceptable to our usage - as theres no proper LLU those that would be like bethere, O2 and Sky LLU, etc. aren't available... and I refuse to use Enta or any of their resellers - would be like out of the frying pan into the fire...

I'm pretty frustrated by all this as we had this problem with steam and traffic management awhile back - and with 4 gamers, 2 of which spend a lot of time playing online steam gets used and updated quite a lot and when that results in ALL other traffic being knocked offline its very frustrating... (it works fine outside of traffic managed times) eventually after a lot of moaning to BT it went away... but then they moved the connection to WBC resulting in the profile being reset and interleaving being applied - resulting in ping times jumping from 30ms ingame to upto 100ms - and that took around 2 months and contacting Ian Livingstone directly to get it solved... then once that was solved we've been plauged with poor speeds during peak times, and now back to the steam problem...

For several reasons I don't want to move from BT - but its not looking like I have much choice any more...

EDIT: To say I'm frustrated by all this would be an understatement - I'm not usually the type to use all caps in a thread title.

Have you checked the new IDnet packages as they now support WBC and have a larger usage allowance.

Hmm their home super pro package does look good £34/m is cheap for 40gig on peak 140gig off aslong as its not throttled to hell and back.

EDIT: Quite a few posts about poor ping times on them around these forums and on google... so thats a chance I'd rather not take...
