PPPoE, MTU and VC/LLC

[link to this post]

Just thought I'd have a quick play with my Netgear modem, and set it to PPPoE, and funny enough it connects and the Internet is fine, never worked before. I'm just curious what other settings should I use; MTU is currently set to 1458, 1500 does not work, anyone know of a good setting? Should I choose VC or LLC multiplexing? VPI/VCI worth changing also?

Also curious if this has anything to do with 21CN installed and WBC enabled at my exchange?

While PPPoE will often work, it sometimes stops working for no real reason, so going back to PPPoA is best.

Ipstream has always run with both PPPoA and PPPoE, but PPPoA is the supported method.

WIth VC/LLC which ever one works, and if you change VPI/VCI from 0 and 38 it will not work.

As MrSaffron has posted some settings work some don't. These settings are generally fixed and altering these wont give any better a setting than previously. Sometimes changing the MTU can allow more data to transfer but as you have found it doesn't work.

Having just been upgraded to a 21CN connection our pppoe connection stopped working - it took quite a while to discover we needed to change from VC to LLC encapsulation - but then it worked fine - hope this helps someone else!
