Sudden Speed Drop

[link to this post]

I've been with BT for a few years now and had really decent consistent download speeds of up to 6 megs. In the last couple of weeks though the speeds have dropped considerably to less than 1 meg at times. The Inidan help desk say there are no faults on the line and say because my downstream speed is 8128kbps everything is OK. They can't seen to grasp that the actual download speed is low! I have nothing else plugged into the tel point ( eg no Sky, Answering machines etc) There is only the one point in the house with an extension wire to the router which has worked perfectly in the past.
The router is Bthome hub V2 (blackone) and the stats are
Line state Connected
Connection time 0 days, 18:33:49
Downstream 8,128 Kbps
Upstream 448 Kbps

ADSL Settings
VPI/VCI 0/38
Type PPPoA
Modulation G.992.1 Annex A
Latency type Fast
Noise margin (Down/Up) 12.9 dB / 23.0 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up) 21.4 dB / 13.0 dB
Output power (Down/Up) 12.4 dBm / 1.6 dBm
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote) 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote) 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote) 0 / 0
FEC Errors (Down/Up) 0 / 1
CRC Errors (Down/Up) 7 / 5
HEC Errors (Down/Up) 12 / 1
Error Seconds (Local/Remote) 5 / 2

I rebooted the router but it hasn't made any difference.
Can anybody see anything wrong with these stats or suggest what I can do to improve the download speeds? Thanks

I'd say the stats were fine except the error seconds may be a bit high for 18 hours connection. Particularly seeing as the other errors are very low.

Can you post the full results from a BT speed test please?

Again the only thing wrong there is the actual speed. The profile is correct.

Is that wired or wireless between the computer and router? If wireless see what you get wired.

Zurdo , I have the same problem except mine gets about 200-300 kbs all through the day.
I'm also connected at 6000kbs, and have a BRAS IP Profile of 5000kbs.
One thing i have noticed is that at about 1 AM it gets to near 5000kbs then all through the day from early morning until about Mid Night it remains at around 100-300kbs.

I posted on the Forums and still no reply , I dont think people understand how the BroadBand works , much like the People from BT who tell me that i have to wait 4-5 days then it will be OK.
They dont give me a reason to why i cant get a speed which i have had for 5 months then has suddenly gone.
No fault on the line either im told, so why do BT restrict the line speed ???? I have no idea much the same as yourself.
If i find the answer i shall let you know.

I have both wired and wireless computers, both showing slow donloads.
Thanks for the crumb of comfort Widgetman, I'm as foxed as you are, especially as i used to have such good results before. I emailed bthelp and have gone through the procedures to speed it up, but no joy. I even blamed the Chrissy lights but it happened before they were put up and it's still the same when they aren't on!

I emailed Btcare with router stats and btspeedtester results and today had a phone call from them saying they would report a fault with their provider.........presumbably BT telecoms. Doing another speed test a few mins ago the speed is back up to over 5000Kbps so perhaps they've done something down at the echange, Result............one happy bunny (at least for now!)
Thanks for the replies folks and best of luck Widgetman.

You might have seen elsewhere that I too have been widgetting about a sudden speed drop. Until the end of October I was getting at least 2976kbps dl consistently on a config of 2500kbps. Then it went down and down (config 1500kbps). Btcare said that there was work in hand at my exchange for the adsl upgrade, which was scheduled for completion at the end of November. I'm now told that the work hasn't been finished, but there's no indication of when it might be. Last few days have seen dl speeds in the mid 100s, but the latest from btcare seems to be backpedalling from the initial diagnosis ...

Have you checked if there's anything similar occurring in your own exchange?

D'oh! you're right...............it's BT Wholesale. Oh and the speed increase looks like it was temporary, it's back to 400Kbps now!
