Moving from O2 to BT's Infinity service.

Hi All,

I have now found out that BT's Infinity service is available in my area and I am considering moving from O2 broadband.

Don't get me wrong O2 have been great and I have been getting decent speeds with them and their service has been spot on.

However I am very interested in the upload speed of around 7 Meg which would improve my experience of hosting online games.

I do however have a few questions regarding the service.

1. What speeds do you reckon I should get? My current stats are below and I am approx 1.1KM from my local exchange.

2. Does anyone know what BT's download limit is per month on the Infinity service. Also what is the throttling like if they do restrict your speed? I would say that I download less than 100Gb a month but if I was to go over this what speed would my service be reduced to?

Speed estimates - over 15Meg assuming the distance from the cabinet to your home is less than 1.1km

There is a fair use policy which is thought to be 100GB, and as its over the WBC that the connection runs you will get the traffic management.

The pricing of the product also suggests that traffic management will be similar to what those on BT Total Option 3 experience. If price per month was £30+ then you could be more positive about the experience.

My cabinet is around 200 yards from the house. I have been trawling internet forums to see other people's experiences of BTs use of the FUP and their use of the traffic management on this Infinity service without much luck. This is probably due to the fact that it was only released on or around the 25th Jan.

If their traffic management say reduces 15 Meg Down to 8 Meg then I am not too bothered, however if they reduce it down to 1 Meg then that will be a problem!

You could look at AAISP who are selling FTTC connections over WB(M)C, and have a word with uno the new name for xilo home SOHO products) who are trialling it.

Athough they would have the IP profile system, and perhaps some sort of noise margin management as well, (I must look into that), they will not have the BT Total traffic management. In the same way as their (and most other ISPs) existing BTW products don't have BT Total restrictions.

Thanks for the info. I have checked AAISP, however they are just too expensive for peak usage. Looking at BT again I think they wont let me get away with 150GB monthly usage for their 'unlimited' service.

Virgin XXL service is available in my area so that could well be another option.

Send a PM to uno on these forums and point him to this thread. Or just say I told you they are trialling it and you are interested.

I expect prices to be much lower than AAISP for peak.
