Do BT chuck exessive users off?

[link to this post]

My old neighbour has BT broadband and only went with it as BT lied/made a mistake and told them their line was diconnected as hadnt been used in 6 years!(when in fact they had 2 lines in property and BT checked the "wrong" one) so they decided on BT to save the connection charge.

They are just into their 3rd month but constantly get letters telling them they are over their limit which at 100 gig is a LOT! for a 8 meg connection! They tell me they leave their pc's on 24/7 but mainly do downloads when they are in bed so told them if possible get out of contract and go with a Entanet reseller as it would work out cheaper month by month and only short term contracts so if they dislike it they can leave.

So shall I tell them to try and get a way to leave? or I have been reading about the new FUPS that come into place soon which would be great for them but expensive for a few months.

They will never chuck an excessive user off they will simply throttle the hell out fo there connection during peek period. However an ISP does have the right to do this

What are they downloading? Does 100 GB pm seem reasonable to them? Or could it be that their wireless connection is being hijacked? Should have WPA2 encryption and long key if wireless is switched on.

1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up => 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB => 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB => 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU BB => 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU BB

If they mainly do downloads of the torrent flavour, they may not have realised that they will also be uploading until they stop the torrent from running, and that also counts towards their usage?

Quite possible they overlooked this and are acting as a seed for umpteen linux distros...

which bt option are they on?

option 1 is 10gig, and iplayer can very easily use that

and bt then charge excess use.

There is your answer to the usage ... 1 hour of streamed 4OD can be 200MB or more.

That's at the lowest quality. 675MB/hour on iPlayer for SD video at high quality, 1.44GB/hour if you watch BBC HD on iPlayer.

An ISP with "unlimited" Internet is there to provide you with that, unlimited Internet. If they chuck you off, they fail as an ISP and also for false advertising.

I hope net neutrality becomes law one day in this country too! ISP allows their service, example BT Vision, to stream without throttling, but they throttle competitors TV services via web. That's for anther topic.

nope you are wrong there your BT Vision usage is not counted in your usage allowance, your bbc i player 4od ect is not throttled but is counted in your usage allowance. a difference small one but a difference remember you are paying for your BT Vision subscriptions therfore you are not using your usage allowance whilst watching a BT Vison on deamnd product bad business sense really.

However, BT do seem to throttle Youtube. It's unusable from 4PM to midnight.

They even throttled port 80 at one time. crazy
