It seems I fixed it - the problem disappeared at exactly the same time I switched over to Google's DNS.
Now I'm back on BT's DNS it's still all working.
Coincidence??? I think not smile
Definitely your fault. You somehow set up an internal loop at the BT routers causing self-DDOS attacks between them. As soon as you switched your DNS servers you broke the loop and everything slowly came back as their buffers cleared.

Still no explanation from BT with the only mention of it on their own Community Form being a short thread (hidden away in "The Lounge") and the brief statement on the homepage (and Twitter)
"Sorry about the issues many of you had accessing the Internet this morning. Problem is now fixed. Sorry for any trouble caused."

May need management to sign off on the 'issue' so that it can be announced - a common thing in big firms but no one wants to bother the boss at the weekend.

I did catch a very brief news item about BT apologising to its users for their loss of Internet on one of BBC 3's 60 second news bursts on Saturday evening just before one of the Glastonbury shows started.
