Accurate speed prediction?

Hello,

Currently with John Lewis Broadband (8Mb Unlimited) but my exchange (WMWRK) has recently been enabled for FTTC.

I was wondering how accuarate BT's predictions are.

From https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/ I get:

From what I've read this seems a little optimistic as I'm around 1.8KM from the Exchange. (As the crow flies using Google Earth.)

Could I realistically receive those speeds?

With FTTC its not how far you are from your exchange, its how far you are away from your cabinets (PCP and Fibre), going by those FTTC speeds I would say you are very close to it i.e. its down your road or on a side road very close to you.

Just found what a BT cabinet looks like and had look on Google Streetview for one and it looks like I'm 50 metres away from it.

Yeah, you should have either 1 "all in one" cabinet (contains both the PCP phone cabinet and the actual fibre stuff) or two cabinets 1 PCP (phone copper lines) and a fibre one (loads of vents on it) they are normally 10m apart from each other.

But 50m is very good

Phone line is still all the way from the exchange.
FTTC is tapped and added onto the phone line at the new FTTC green cabinet near your house. The closer the cabinet is to your house, the better.

Looks like you should be able to get 40M now, 80M now if you want to pay extra (some ISP's charge £5-£10 extra) and when BT launch their 100-120M service you should get that at full speed too.
