It is almost certainly down to a firmware option. .Probably a hard-wired link on the motherboard which defines it as WAN+3LAN or 4LAN and from that, the appropriate firmware module is implemented. What we need to see are the firmware builds for the two variants.

I just despair at BT. All that fuss with the HH5A vs the HH5B and now this. You would have thought they'd learnt - but no, not BT.

Firstly , I am FTTC

I have gone
(Study ) BT RS12 from Master Socket - Smart Hub RS12 socket - Ethernet socket 1 then

( Computer Room ) to Network switch

Have now reset 10 devices , just another 15 to go .

Have to say , would have been helpful if BT explained all this in a leaflet or FAQ somewhere if you use the OLD Red WAN socket. Anyway all working now

I don't know about your rant here.... BT have done nothing wrong this time...

They made kit for two different types of technology, I think that's good...

What's the point in an FTTP user having a router with a modem built in running alongside another modem, removing that internal modem will surely save a wee bit of power and maybe increase performance too.

At the end of the day the recommended setup is to connect the new hub directly to master socket and get connected, the HH5 was the same but had the option of using the red WAN port.

I was looking at some pics of the new hubs internal the other day and noticed that there was soldering points for an additional RJ45 port next to the RJ11 port.... So I would assume soldering in an RJ45 and connecting to it may trigger the connection to switch over but it might need a firmware change too...

I suppose there's only one way to find out if anyone is brave enough.

There is still a Broadband/FTTC input on an FTTP version though. In another thread you mention an RJ45 position adjacent to the RJ11 on te motherboard; that could well be for a different version supplied in a different market.

Well though it doesn't help much in the context of this thread, fitted a 6 on an FTTP install today. It did indeed ship with a red marked wan port.

Only an 80/20 circuit, but using the speediest.net app to my 5s it showed 8ms ping 76 down and 20.72 up (the up on these circuits always shows just over max in my testing)
