@TheBaron,
IMHO, I've helped out a few OAP's that live with my parents in a McCarthy & Stone building and found I needed to be face-to-face with them. This was so that I could show them how to switch on the device (be it a tablet or a desktop or laptop...) and teach them how to handle the basics including setting up an email address or shopping on the internet, etc. You might end up forking out for a device and connection that will not be used until after you can sit down with them and teach them about the device, which will not be until after restrictions are lifted.
Just my 2 cents worth.....

Thanks, I'm now thinking of a microsoft tablet that can have team viewer on. I think remote support will be required. I note Marks comments about F2F but I need that remote option. Also just thought, would want whatsapp on the device, he has no need of a mobile phone......

Win 10 is ok'ish as a tablet but the touch screen interface of the OS is still nowhere near as user friendly as Android or Apple - buttons can still be too small and it is still a hybrid OS between desktop and tablet. For ease of use I would still go with an Android tablet over Win 10 despite the lack of proper remote control support. Just my personal experience.

Or get a couple of redundant Win7 laptops, install an ubuntu OS on both, setup remote assist and job done.

I was comparing tablets - I haven't used Linux in some while so not sure how good it is with touchscreens on tablet devices these days.
I am not sure of the specific requirement for tablet but I am guessing it is because the person who will be using it isn't computer literate and may not have used touchpads, mice, keyboards a great deal - I could be wrong as we haven't been given the reasoning behind it being a tablet specifically.

I'm nearly 70 years old and need a keyboard and mouse these days but find xubuntu really easy to use for browsing, emails etc. However there can very occasionally be issues with bios/graphics (grub) and that can require booting into a previous kernal but a phone call could sort that out.

@TheBaron,
Now that you've decided one what to get your uncle, the next step is to, some how, teach him remotely how to switch it on and get it configured with his broadband connection. I hope he's had experience of using computers before or else this is going to be a bigger mountain to climb than Mount Everest! Bare in mind that you might need to take things at a pace slower than a snail and repeat yourself several times, possibly. f you would like a hand please feel free to PM me.

Have a look at the Dell deals https://deals.dell.com/en-uk/category/laptop-deals £529 for one that will do all he needs ... And if you call, the salesperson will presssure you to make a decision and you can then use that to get a reduction of 10-20%. And delivery on most is just 2-3 days.

Get it sent to you and install the Win 10 and any apps he needs.
Then send it to him and all that is needed is the wifi setup which generally comes on a bit of plastic slotted into the top of the BT Hub.
Or maybe have that sent to you as well and set the pair up and send both to him?
My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Three 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.
