Because he referred to Cardiff and not Great Britain. Great Britain being the largest island in the British Isles and the island of Ireland being the second.

People, this is a minefield and really not worth getting the metal detectors out for. Best these conversations are left to the wild west threads down in 'The Park'

Having just been through a nightmare of getting a simple house move done I can safely say BT & OR badly need to sort their IT systems out. The details don’t matter in this thread, but what does is that 3 callbacks resulted in no one on the other end of the line when it rang and I answered. Having checked the incoming number, rung it to be told it was BT but no one had answered, you can imagine that I was less than impressed.
I rang the 0800 800 150 number and having finally got through was also told by an operator that they had called but no one answered. I answered every call but it didn’t connect! They were apologetic - and pretty scathing of their own systems.
Evening calls tended to get through faster - less than 5 mins, whereas daytime calls (as you’d expect) took up to 40 mins on hold.

It may come as a bit of a shock to you but Northern Ireland is part of Ireland. Correct. Ireland is the whole island. The two parts are Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The Republic of Ireland occupies most of the island of Ireland, off the coast of England and Wales. Its capital, Dublin, is the birthplace of writers like Oscar Wilde, and home of Guinness beer. The 9th-century Book of Kells and other illustrated manuscripts are on show in Dublin’s Trinity College Library. Dubbed the "Emerald Isle” for its lush landscape, the country is dotted with castles like medieval Cahir Castle. The terms in common usage are only that.

To quote the Constitution of Ireland, of 1937, which states that "the name of the State is Éire, or, in the English language, Ireland"
http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/cons/en/html#part1 Article 4
And consists of 26 Counties. Name of the state: The Constitution declares that "[the] name of the State is Éire, or, in the English language, Ireland" (Article 4). Under the Republic of Ireland Act 1948 the term "Republic of Ireland" is the official "description" of the state; the Oireachtas, however, has left unaltered "Ireland" as the formal name of the state as defined by the Constitution.

Similarly, when someone says "Cardiff" I don't automatically think of the local government authority that administers the geographic area that is Cardiff.
