Hi folks, I haven't logged in on here in years, so I decided to pay you all a visit to ask my question.
I have BT Infinity and am currently using a Draytek Vigor 2750n combined modem router (not sure if "combined modem router" is the correct term!).
I've had it for a lot of years and I'd like something new because, if the Draytek unit develops a fault or simply stops working, I'll have no internet until I buy something new. I plan to keep the Draytek as a backup.
I would like something that is a combined modem router and something that is as reliable as the Draytek. My budget is around £200 - £250 at a push.

No requirements other than it's getting old? Do you have BT TV? Do you use the wifi on the Vigor?
No other requirements really. I don't play games online - I just use it for watching Youtube and Netflix.
I don't have BTTV and there are 3 people in the house that use wifi, although it wouldn't get overly heavy use. I would watch Youtube videos or do the occasional bit of downloading. The other two people would also watch Youtube or sometimes Netflix.

Could you just upgrade to a later Vigor?
Any suggestions as to which model? I'm happy with the Vigor, but I don't know which of the newer models are good.

I dare say Ill get shouted down, but why not just go the obvious route ?

Mine is rock solid with its new firmware, the wifi is impressive ... its all you need judging by your usage description.
Theres a 17 year old here who is single handedly working his way though all YouTube and Netflix have to offer. At other times 6 users all happily connecting at the same time . Simplicity to use and set up, and then you can get to choosing what else you might splurge your saved £200 on

Thanks for the reply Zarjaz.
I was actually offered a HH6 from BT for only £10 postage but I declined after reading the threads on the BT forums and on here. .
Some people seem to have been really lucky with them and have had zero problems, I'm not sure I want to take that risk though
I'm not sure I want to take that risk though
Hardly a risk for a tenner is it ?
They really do seem to have ironed out most of the initial bugs that were causing the noises about it ......
You're absolutely right.
At the time my thoughts were something along the lines of "this sounds so bad I'm not even going to waste a tenner on the postage".
I might give it a shot.
But, if anyone has any other suggestions feel free
That's the spirit
If they really were so hideously flakey, I suspect I'd have a fair idea due to my work.
I held off and used a VDSL modem and a 4 for donkeys, but when I moved they sent me one FOC, even then I was reticent. But I am happy to report the two issues I did have, the 14 day reboot (fixed by new firmware) and the weirdness between this router and a Pure Evoke wifi radio (exorcised by a local witch doctor/or possibly the firmware again) are resolved.

I have been using a BT Smart Hub for quite a while and so far have had no issues at all with it. Have split the wireless to use different SSIDs for 2.4 and 5Ghz but otherwise haven't really changed anything.
Agreed, havent had to do the WiFi split thing, it just works ... and that is exactly what I want from my various gizmos.

I dare say Ill get shouted down, but why not just go the obvious route ?

Pass - just read the item title.

but don't buy that one if you're after a Hub 6 because it isn't one

I've recently had delivered the new Billion BiPAC 8800AXL R2 and I can highly recommend it. Good BDCM chipset and decent WiFi.

Cheers BatBoy, got one already.

Thanks for the recommendation.
Stupid question - but what am I looking for to say any unit is a combined modem router?

Ain't such a thing as a stupid question.
Look for ADSLx/VDSLx in the routers description.
ADSLx for normal broadband and VDSLx for fibre.

But, if anyone has any other suggestions feel free I love my HomeHub 6, never had an issue with it. It works flawlessly, I also split my SSIDs, the range is great too
I actually stopped using a custom router when I got my smarthub, it had better range.

Yes, you presumably want to buy a router that has a VDSL (and perhaps ADSL) modem that will connect to a phone line. A number of the more expensive routers don't do this, they just have an ethernet port that connects to a separate modem such as the BT supplied HG612.
If you have FTTC to a Huawei cabinet, then its best to find a VDSL router that supports g.inp

I will find out for you.

OP, as you're willing to spend a couple of hundred you should buy the very best modem router money can buy.
Going for one of the 4 stream Mu-Mimo routers such as Billion 8900AX, Asus DSL-AC88U or TP Link VR2800 will be your best bet. All of these use the latest (or new-ish) Broadcom xDSL chipsets and wifi coverage will be the dogs you-know-what. When I recently tried the VR2800 on my backup TalkTalk FTTC line, it gave me the highest attainable rate ever - 85Mb. Amazon were recently selling the VR2800 for £159.99 which imho is an excellent price but I think they've jacked up their prices again.

Best wishes. I have a homehub 6 laying around, used for around 7 months, one leg missing but stands up fine. Never had a problem or reboot in that time (apart from essential stuff). Happy to post to you.

Thanks for your kind offer, but it's quite alright at the moment. I think I'm going to go for the Billion mentioned in this thread.
Best wishes and thank you.

Yes, it's the BCM63167.
Can't find much on the chipset other than it is in the BT Hub.
