Netgear 834GT overheating

[link to this post]

My DG834GT Router is dropping the connection and not re-connecting on a daily basis at about mid-day or early afternoon. It's located in a south facing room and the ambient temperature does get pretty high during the day when the house is empty and the windows closed.

I have read references to these routers being susceptible to overheating, but has anyone else experienced similar issues?

have been running it flat, but am now trying it upright in the clips.

Yes!
Mine was cured by changing the microfilter, plugging into the master socket, keeping it cool, upgrading Firmware and disabling UPnP - don't know which one worked - but keeping a piece of elecrical equipment that gets that hot as cool as possible makes sense to me on general principle.

Yes I am having same problems with the 834GT too but I now got the router standing by fitting the included verticle stand pieces. That's reduced the heat problem a bit and the connection is more stable but the router is still quite warm to the touch.

Mine is overheating too. Net activity just completely starts to lag and then dies. I'm having to reboot my router by the plug 7 or 8 times a day AT LEAST.

Anyone got a good solution to keep it cool... it being stood vertical with a desk fan bellowing at it isnt working

I've got a DG834GT which doesn't overheat, so you might find it useful to compare these stats:

Room temperature 25 degrees C.
Thermometer placed on top of router for 30 minutes reads 38 degrees C.
(Router placed flat & no fans)

So if your router is much more than 15 degrees higher than room temp, you may have a faulty router.

I've had the dg834gt router now for a couple of weeks and have had nothing but trouble with it. It overheated right from the first day when it was layed down flat so ive had to put it on its stand which has helped. But with the weather we have had this last week its been doing the same on hot days. Its the modem in mine that locks up because the router always works fine and I can network its just the internet I have trouble with as it wont sync to the line when it gets hot. I rang my ISP ukonline and they said it is very common and that I could try having a fan blowing over it all the time. I think I may just send it back though as to me a product that overheats is not fit for the purpose it was bought for.

Here's a recent relevant post ...

http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=demon&Number=2517265

where the poster says his router overheated and lost sync because his power supply was putting out 18 volts instead of 12 volts.

(But this isn't conclusive, because my "good" Netgear DG834GT 12-volt power supply gives 16 volts when measured under "no load" conditions).

So the PSU is unregulated.
Taking this into account, you have to assume Netgear has put the required voltage regulator(s) inside the router, rather than in the PSU.
One wonders if this is where some of the heat is coming from?
