Can't connect via broadband.

[link to this post]

Hello. I can't connect to the internet exept thru this 56k dial-up. I'm with Zen Internet and I've got a Netgear router (dg834g).

It claims it can't detect the ADSL line.

any help?

A few more details may help someone to help you.

Have you had a working connection at all?

Does the Netgear show a steady ADSL light? (3rd from left) If not, then you either have a problem with the router or with your line, possibly your internal wiring. Do you have a USB modem you could use to decide which?

No, that light is not on.

and the USB modem does not detect dial tone.

Have you got a new-style NTE5 master socket, the type where the bottom half of the faceplate can be removed? If you have, try testing by removing that faceplate and plugging the router into the test socket which will be exposed. If the ADSL light comes on, you have an internal wiring fault. You can either find and fix it yourself, or get your ISP to get BT out to you, but this will cost.

If you still don't get the light, then it looks like a BT line or equipment fault. Contact your ISP and get them to investigate.

a 'new-style NTE5 master socket'? No, I don't have that.

It's strange when the USB modem says no dialtone when this dial-up works...

It's really saying 'no sync' but it thinks it's a dial-up connection. OK, without an NTE5, the only other things you can try for yourself are: (a) remove the ring wire at every extension. This is the wire on terminal 3, often orange/white. That will reduce any noise pickup. (b) remove everything from your phone sockets except your router. If the ADSL light comes on, then something you are plugging in is the cause, try things one at a time until you find out which.

If neither of these help, you will have to raise the fault with your ISP, but be aware that, if an engineer visit is arranged, and a fault is found after the master socket, you will be liable to pay.
