Speedtouch 585 no dns?

[link to this post]

I just picked up a v6 585.
It works in that I can connect and the internet check in the web page shows ok.
BUT: I can only connect using ip's not url's. So dns is shafted. fw is 6.2.17.5 and I cannot get it to use anything else, I have tried using the updater and the bootp method.
I have tried adding the dns servers using the cli, but it still will not resolve.

Anybody have any idea's or do I bin it?

How is the DNS configured?
- What addresses does the DHCP in the router pass to the PC?

Have you tried any other configurations?

the dhcp APPEARS to pass the correct addresses from the provider. BUT I cannot get any resolving done, either by ping, nslookup or web.
Switching back to my linksys works fine.

Tested on both direct connection and via my smoothwall firewall.
Also tested on xp and Linux.

Try switching off both the router and pc. Wait a few moments, then start the router, and once it has established a connection, start the pc. I've found Speedtouch's to sometimes be a bit funny about being chopped and changed.
Also, you may need to set up the initial connection details via the quick/easy setup on the router to get it to use them.
If all else fails, a factory reset.

what is the DNS server set to on the clients ?

ISTR an issue where the Speedtouch routers gave out two IP addresses on the go for DNS or similar and this messed up some clients.

The DNS served is the correct one, I even have it set manually on my linux boxes but I get no dns resolves.

Are you allowing UDP responses on 69 back in thru the router to your machine. By default they will be allowed out but DNS like NTP (and ICMP for that matter) require a reverse path configuring / allowing in most firewalls as UDP does not hold a stateful connection for the NAT table to allow the reply..

so what DNS settings do the clients receive ?

have you tried the conventional solution of using the router as DHCP server.

I have tried it with both the firewall on in std mode and off. I set up a rule to forward all ports to my firewall, but still no dns.
I have reset it, back to factory defaults, connected a laptop using the router as dhcp (via ethernet no wireless not tried wireless yet), it gets an ip address and the it uses the router as the dns server i.e. same gateway & dns server addresses, I have tried using nslookup with the enta dns servers but get no response , but I get no resolution of dns using the 585.

As I say very strange as dns seems to be the only thing, apart from not wanting to update, that it will not pass. With all the ports forwarded to my firewall utorent runs fine, bar it cannot connect to the trackers by name all client connections are ok and the port forward is green.
