ADSL2+ = Worse Performance

[link to this post]

Does anyone seem to get worse performance using ADSL2+ rather than normal ADSL with the speedtouch 585v6 router, i've just been switched to ADSL2+ and i've lost over 1Mb in bandwidth, isn't ADSL2+ suppose to improve things or is it just this router?.

tommy I did write in ukonline forum that in my opinion the speedtouch 585 is not great on easynet adsl2 services. I believe it works well on BE (due to chipset) but not on ukonline.

First check if you synched using adsl2+ or adsl2. If you have DMT that will tell you.

Look for modulalion.

992.3 is adsl2
992.5 is adsl2+

If its on adsl2+ try forcing a adsl2 synch. My line was worse on adsl2+ in both downstream and upstream on the speedtouch, on adsl2 downstream was the same with upstream remaining worse and the lines was also less stable.

With a more compatible router the billion 7402 (same chipset as easynet) adsl2+ remained worse in downstream but the upstream was better, adsl2 was better for both downstream and upstream.

So its a combination of the router and that your line is poor so not very compatible with adsl2+, note adsl2 and adsl2+ behave differently, adsl2 will allocate the power amongst less tones.

My advice is either buy a compatible router the billion 7402 and force it to adsl2 (without the +), combined with coding gain 7 you should get a decent synch both up and down as well as been very stable because of SRA.

If you cant afford it or dont want to replace the router then go back to adsl1 with your speedtouch.

Thanks for your reply, just a question though how do i force a sync like you have asked me to try, thing is my connection seems to be stable now on ADSL2+ even though the SNR is the same as it was with normal ADSL, i'm gonna ask them to put me back on normal ADSL tomorrow and see if the line drops start again, if they do then there must be summat wrong with there end or maybe mine.

if it stable now then perhaps is best to leave alone given your recent problems.

The line drops suggest one of 3 things in my opinion.

(a) line related fault possibly dslam port.
(b) very noisy line
(c) bad settings ukonline side.

The easiest way to force a different adsl modulation on the speedtouch is using dmt, you should even be able to do this on the later limited firmwares. Without dmt I think the only way is in the telnet, and as I not got my speedtouch in use at the moment I cant get the command for you. Bear in mind whilst you on adsl2+ you got the freedom to synch up on all 3 versions.

adsl -
adsl2 -
adsl2+ -

I,m not sure about you but my ADSL2+ DS Sync rate has been almost "double" and very stable ever since I migrated from normal ADSL Max (i.e. 992.1 from an Entanet Reseller) to O2 Standard ADSL2+ LLU about 2 week,s ago. I must admitted that I,m using the O2 Wireless Box (i.e. 585 V7) supplied and my DS SNR is set to 6db instead of the previously 11dbs when I was with ADSL Max (using my own ST585 V6 instead). As far as I,m concerned that is a good migration for me from ADSL Max to ADSL2+ LLU because I have almost double my Sync rates both DS and US, and even paying less moneyly sub..

Well it looks like the line is droppin again now for some reason, how do you force a sync then using DMT, do you know?.

I think i've figured out how to do it, i've tried using ADSLv1 ADSL2 and ADSL2+ and ADSLv1 seems to give me the best sync both down and up.

Use whatever works the best... however I did note that when I tried a 585v7 on O2, I also "lost" a lot of sync.

it turned out it was negotiating G992.5 annexe M - and on my 62dB atten line, this gave worse up and downstream than G992.5 Annexe A (the default). I don't think I should even have annexe M, as I'm on a 8 mbps service -- but it's possible my dslam profile has been faffed about with after some technical issues. Or this fw has a bug...

I ended up going into the CLI to disable annexe M.

However the 780WL, running v6 sw did not have this problem.

If you need to try this, get yourself telnet access and then use the "xdsl debug multimode config=+g992.5_annexe_a" to force normal adsl2+ (annexe a)

I think i'm certain that it is using Annex A, because next to modulation in my router it says G.992.1 Annex A, by the way i'm forcing it to use ADSLv1 now as it works the best, but i'm sure when it connects using ADSL2+ the modulation is still on Annex A.

EDIT: just tried connecting with ADSL2+ again and it still says Annex A so must be right.

How do the Netgear routers perform using ADSL2+ as i know my sister has one of them that she isn't using now?.
