I cannot even upgrade either (current firmware Firmware 6.2.17.5 (DR) )
I know this problem has been discussed many times and i have searched all over the internet for instructions, which i now have. However whenever i try to downgrade to ST585v6_6143UK_Firmware.I get these error messages...
The device failed to startup in upgrade mode
This Device did not respond anymore after upgrade
click back to retry the upgrade process
power cycle the device and restart the wizard
i keep on trying and i just keep on getting the above errors.I have tried resetting the router
I have changed the TCP setting like the guide said, but for the life of me i cannot get this router to change it's firmware!!
Any help greatly appreciated,thanks!

Any firewalls on the pc (windows or otherwise)? Give the pc a static address in the same range.

Sometimes mine said it failed to update, even though it had been successful... Just double-check the reported firmware.

Yes well worth a check, the 585v6 I used to use did that on a couple of occasions

I found the following some time ago now on a PCAdvisor magazine forum which worked for me when I had the same problem.
Also worth a try is simply to 'click the 'back' box in the wizard and it runs again.
"To Downgrade SpeedTouch 585 v.6 Firmware
Connect the unit to the computer via Ethernet port 1 ** MUST be port 1
Have the SpeedTouch Upgrade Wizard interface open; either from SpeedTouch CD or file.
Begin with the unit powered Off via switch at the back
Using pin/pencil push the Reset button and hold it in
Keeping the Reset button pushed in, power On the unit.
Do Not Release the Reset button for 15 seconds.
The Power light initially goes amber and then both Power and Ethernet lights should flash between red and green
Run the SpeedTouch Upgrade Wizard.
You only have around a minute to start the wizard before the SpeedTouch reverts to the normal bootup and the downgrade will fail if this happens."
Hope this helps.

As per all the other replies so far, particularly I'm sure I had to turn off my software firewall. Windows firewall was OK so I turned that on for the job.
I also got the message saying it had failed, but a reboot showed it was OK.

I see downgrading the firmware on this router is common.
Can I ask why people do it? What advantage does the older firmware give?

6.1.4.3 allows you to tweak the noise margin. But is less stable than later ones and often reports a huge number of errors.
All firmwares after 6.1.4.3 have the relevant commands disabled.

"But is less stable than later ones and often reports a huge number of errors."
That's purely because it's holding sync well down to very low SNRs, and coping with the errors that doing that creates. It's a lovely device on 6.1.4.3.
