I didn't find later firmwares any less good at holding sync, in fact you quote me as saying 6.1.4.3 was less stable. Meaning I got more disconnections at the default margin of 6dB.

Purely my own experience of course, and the main reason for people downgrading is surely the tweakability anyway .

I've tried to follow these instructions to downgrade my 585v6 but:-

Every attempt shows the 6.1.4.3 (or any other) firmware marked as incompatible. However, the latest upgrade utility does allow you to override that by highlighting the firmware from the window, then clicking next (the earlier versions stopped you right there).

However, what then happens is that the firmware then gets uploaded to the router, and the next step is something like 'applying firmware'. At this stage, EVERY time, the network connection drops, and the progress bars then usually shoot to the end and the upgrade wizards says failed.

I've done it with a wired connection, static ip, tried with different laptops, different OS's and turned off firewalls.

mine did this, it was locked to AOL and had the same firmware you had. I think the router is firmware locked.

I seem to remember the updates always said they had failed, but a power cycle (and subsequent normal use) showed it had in fact succeeded.

Though if you have one that is locked to a provider, as Lemzip just posted, that's a different matter of course.
