New Router Advice

Hi,

We've been using an old Belkin F5D7630 router, its now starting to fail on us..... Our line quality is not great and currently syncs at 3200Kbps (line stats below). Of course if a particular router handles longer lines better that would be ideal - but I know they are only modem/routers and cannot preform miracles.

We connect with only an ADSL up to 8 Meg connection. Our exchange has no other providers and no ADSL2+ and doubt that would be the case in the near future (no current plans by any provider). Of course if the ideal router is already ADSL2+ ready that wont deter me, but it is not required.

If you need anymore information please let me know, and thanks in advance for any advice / recommendations you can provide.

Have a look on eBay for a Netgear 834G, GT, PN or N, or a Speedtouch 585v6 or 585v7.

Should be fine.

51dB attenuation should be able to achieve 4Mbps-6Mbps. Have you checked your phone wiring? See my Troubleshooting section, particularly the Ring/Bell wire and Miscellaneous nasties pages.

Hi, the BT Business Hub 2700HGV wireless router is renowned for performing well on a long line, get one cheap on ebay.

Agreed - get a "new" 2700HGV - you will need to do a couple of tweaks but they are not difficult.

Roberto thanks for the advice to check our wiring... We actually have 14 telephone sockets in our house and already have the router plugged in behind the master socket. Before we did this we only got 1meg. But I'll have a look through your guide on the weekend when I have a bit more time.

With the 2700HGV what sort of tweaks would I need to do in order to get it to work?

Hi, I made this quick help for configuring the 2Wire 2700HGV Wireless router.

2Wire BT Business Hub 2700HGV Wireless Router to unlock follow the instructions...

Configure the Locked BT Business Hub 2Wire 2700HGV Router for any ADSL ISP connection.

BT Business Hub 2Wire BT2700HGV Router.

Type, http://192.168.1.254 in your web browser address bar and press enter, then from the router System Summary page, click Setup, Run System Setup Wizard.

SET UP YOUR BT2700HGV Router.

Use the BT Key Code: 528Y - 27G4 - A222 - 22BJ - B22V

or BT Key Code: 528Y � 2374 - A222 - 22BJ - B2QA

or use Manual Key Code: 5225 - 2374 - WG62 - 22AS - BJ7P

Click, [Advanced] then input your ISP settings.

A labourious task, but it would be worth checking that no extensions work.

How do 14 pairs get into T2 and T5?

Also if you have a phone-connected burglar alarm, that is often wired into the A/B hidden terminals at the back, with no filter. That should be at the control panel end.

Thanks for all the advice I've brought the BT Business Hub on eBay much cheaper than buying a new router.

Thanks E7er for the quick guide to unlocking the router, hopefully it shouldn't be too difficult when it arrives.

RobertoS, we had a new build house and my father had the builders install phone sockets in every room no idea how this was done. All I do know is when we first opened to the test socket (and plugged the filter and router into this socket) the rest of the extensions did not work, but the speed increased from 1-3meg. We then got a cable from the 'phone' extension of the filter and connected it to a nearby phone extension and it seems which after which the extensions worked.
