Netgear DGN1000 page load problems

I'm having some problems with a new Netgear DGN1000-100UKS router. Latest firmward from Netgear site - V1.1.00.41_ww. Previously had the standard Be router (TG585v7) - which did not have this problem - ever - that I recall.

The DGN1000 is connected to the internet all ok. I'm with Be, and I am using the Be DNS servers.

Generally, the fisrt time I visit a page, I get an eror "page not found". Hit refresh, page loads. Navigate somewhere else, same again, "page not found"!

Connection has been up for 14 hours (since I turned the box on today).

This is on more than one wired desktop PC.

Wireless is hopeless, but I'll come back to that later.

I tried ping, it fails first time, then passes ok. Any clues?

Sounds like a laggy DNS problem.

Try same tests with the IP addys themselves instead of the domain names.

Looks like a DNS issue.
You could try Gibson's DNSBenchmark to confirm that.

Yes, thanks. I set the router to OpenDNS and everyhthing seems to be working fine.

Odd that the Be DNS servers worked fine with the Be router. Very odd?

Not really! Routers make no diff to DNS, provided both have same ones configured.

But O2 & Be's (& Orange's & prob all other ISPs) DNSs occasionally have their moments of flakiness.

I usually mix-and-match my DNSs; having one each of OpenDNS and my ISP's, to try & get the best of both worlds.

Hi, it is not the DGN1000 router at fault it�s your configuration, have you tried ipconfig /flushdns

Yes, I had tried that.

Now on OpenDNS servers. I had never seen a DNS issue over the past few years on Be with the Be router, but strange that it went up the wall with the Netgear. Searching around here I see the Be DNS can be flaky, as mentioned above.

To be sure, I just checked my saved config from the Be router:
set var=DNS_serv1 value=87.194.255.154
set var=DNS_serv2 value=87.194.255.155

So this is really strange that it is virtually unusable with the Netgear router. I agree and understand there should be no difference based on the router, but I believe there actually is. As I say, I never saw a problem with the Be router (AFAIK), yet it is immediately obvious with the Netgear.

Oh well, I am running fine now, so that's it. I will ping Be tech and see what they have to say.

Hi Tony, I note the BE box comes all preconfigured for you. In the past whenever I�ve had page loading problems it has been caused by the incorrect MTU.

Thanks. Yes, I have messed things up in the past when trying to "optimise" things! But that is on the PC side. I have 3 PC's an iPad and smart phone connected. All devices were playing up.

I had to manually re-set up my Be box 3 months ago - via the wizard interface, when Be tech support provided all the settings.

Currently on the OpenDNS servers and not seeing any problem.
