I called thompson the other day to ask about a few things.
I asked why no firmware options on the website like you used to get. I was told that the licensing has been changed and they only deal with the isp's, so that is why you can't download firmware anymore from thompson.
I asked about generic firmware so I could flash my o2 router. I was basically told that, there is no generic firmware. So I said, how come amazon is selling a generic version of the same router. The reply was, it must be for one of the isp's as they don't sell generic version to the public.
So if anybody has bought the TG582n Router from amazon, could you confirm if it works with any isp? As that would mean misleading people about the router if not.
I was told that the 02, zen and talktalk versions of the TG582n are totally locked down. So that maybe why I can't flash it the normal way. He was not 100% but thinks that you can flash the plusnet router with other firmware.
How it works with the firmware and isp's. The isp's tell thompson what they want on their routers, how much they are locked down and anything else to do with them. Thompson then make the firmware and install the firmware, not the isp. They then make thousands of routers specific to the isp requirements and ship them to the isp's.
So as it's done all at the factory, it makes it harder for us to make the router do what we want it to do.
Was told that the reason isp's use the TG582n ADSL+2 router is because it's cheap. Thats why they won't use a proper VDSL2 modem/router, even though thompson sell them in the netherlands.
Their is always a way around things but hacking the router maybe the only way on certain brands. Since they changed to technicolor, they have got worse. I would avoid all new technicolor routers and this company in future. If you need a broadcom chip, other brands of routers, use them. Best to get one of them.
