You always used to be able to get firmware when it was thompson. I did it myself.

I also ment using say, Plusnet firmware that you can get hold of and flash say an O2 version of it.

But like you say it's not a great router anyway

Not that much on PN about it really. They certainly don't tell you if you can flash it. Not worth £40 if you can't. It will just be an expensive useless brick. crazy

In reply to a post by MrSaffron:
TR069 as in the backdoor is a very common standard these days
Be unlimited use a different somewhat hidden method, it can be disabled if you want to mess around in the cli via telnet, As far as i'm aware there is no config /set up within the user GUI for TR069 like there is in most routers , But the TG582N fails on other things also,

Why the dogged persistence that the router costs £40, it only costs that if you leave Plusnet in the first 12 months.

In reply to a post by ToneDeaf:
I cannot change the default DHCP range and gateway IP which Zen have pre-programmed AND successfully access the internet. Also, if powered down overnight, it occasionally "forgets" device settings which I have nominated (i.e. nomination of static IP allocation and port forwarding).

My Plusnet version allows the network, IP address and DHCP parameters to be changed. It is very much the same as my 585v7 with unbranded firmware.

Right I bought a 02 version of the TG582n Router to see if I could flash it to work on another isp. Well not a lot of luck but some things that may be of use to others. I also called thompson but will post separately about this later.

Here is a snapshot of the o2 router main page and firmware installed. http://s6.postimage.org/5m28dc2v5/o2_router_E.png

I downloaded many files from modem help and tried about 3 different thompson update utilities. Still no luck. frown First I got stuck on the login screen while trying to update. It's not your normal username and that's why it would not work. You need to use SuperUser and serial number as password. This should work in most cases.

I tried to update the router with many plusnet firmware but it says, it's not compatible.
http://s6.postimage.org/5nc66r4ox/o2_router_firm_not...

I found a post on another forum that said you can FTP into the router. At first it failed. That is because I did not use, SuperUser. Now I have never really done ftp into a router and don't know what I am looking at or what you could do to get the router to work with any isp. So see the snapshots and that may help others to crack this issue, who are a bit more clever with this router.

So I have still not had any luck with this router but maybe someone else can hack it or maybe able to use some things I have found out. Think I know why it may not work with this router though.

The router has a USB port so it maybe possible to hack it that way.

How about:

http://wiki.aa.org.uk/index.php/TG582N#TFTP_Firmware...

I don't see what FTP in itself will achieve. Perhaps TFTP?

Never tried that before. That is also for AAIP and so may not work the same with other brands.

Re: Technicolour TG582n Router

I called thompson the other day to ask about a few things.

I asked why no firmware options on the website like you used to get. I was told that the licensing has been changed and they only deal with the isp's, so that is why you can't download firmware anymore from thompson.

I asked about generic firmware so I could flash my o2 router. I was basically told that, there is no generic firmware. So I said, how come amazon is selling a generic version of the same router. The reply was, it must be for one of the isp's as they don't sell generic version to the public.

So if anybody has bought the TG582n Router from amazon, could you confirm if it works with any isp? As that would mean misleading people about the router if not.

I was told that the 02, zen and talktalk versions of the TG582n are totally locked down. So that maybe why I can't flash it the normal way. He was not 100% but thinks that you can flash the plusnet router with other firmware.

How it works with the firmware and isp's. The isp's tell thompson what they want on their routers, how much they are locked down and anything else to do with them. Thompson then make the firmware and install the firmware, not the isp. They then make thousands of routers specific to the isp requirements and ship them to the isp's.

So as it's done all at the factory, it makes it harder for us to make the router do what we want it to do.

Was told that the reason isp's use the TG582n ADSL+2 router is because it's cheap. Thats why they won't use a proper VDSL2 modem/router, even though thompson sell them in the netherlands.

Their is always a way around things but hacking the router maybe the only way on certain brands. Since they changed to technicolor, they have got worse. I would avoid all new technicolor routers and this company in future. If you need a broadcom chip, other brands of routers, use them. Best to get one of them.
