Just trying to see how far cabinet is from house;
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ie=UTF8&ll=53.220087,-...
Is that a BT cabinet?
Looks to me as if controls the pedestrian crossing/traffic lights.
Actually that probably makes sense, hmm wonder where cabinet is then!

Looks like its next to the BT pole.

Looks better...could be CATV if you have it in your area though.
Comms is hard

Nope to both, try again.

I forgot to say were you looking for a FTTC cab.. since in my post is just shows the normal BT Cab. (not the FTTC one - if one is even available in your area)

Yep, thats one of ours. Can't see a fttc within 50m though.

If you put your phone number into this site http://staging.trefor.net/tech-pages/availability-ch... it will give your speed estimates as the BT checker does, but if you then zoom in to your street on the map it will tell you which cabinet youre connected to and if its due to be upgraded. I dont know how accurate it is because it only tells you which cabinet your post code is connected to (a post code could be an entire street which could maybe be split across more than 1 cabinet?). It doesnt say where the cabinets are located though. The one on Hasland Road in the picture linked from the 5th post is cabinet 71, which doesnt yet have a FTTC cabinet.
Some of the other cabinets around here are 11 (bottom of Hasland Road) 46 (on The Green just off the top of Storforth lane, next to the old junior school), 23 (junction of The Green and Broomfield Avenue) and 32 (Junction with Mansfield Road and Hillcrest Road). 11, 46 and 23 all have FTTC cabinets since around 2 weeks ago, and 32 has the area around the cabinet dug up and barricaded off ready.
I hope that helps.

Helps loads, thanks, I actually live on storforth lane so the one at the top is probably closest, unfortunately don't have BT line at the minute so can't really check.
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ie=UTF8&t=h&layer=c&cb...
Presume that is 46?
Will have a nosey on the way home.
Yeah thats the one, but its 45 not 46 (sorry for the typo!)
You can zoom in on the map without putting in a phone number, each post code will have a green cabinet which you can click on for the details. It looks like 45 covers Storforth Lane down as far as just past St Philips Drive (max length around 650m) before moving onto cabinet 74 just before the bridge, and then to 82 after the bridge.
I dont know where the latter 2 are located.

LOL ahh, I am connected to 45, so that's all good.
Been scratching my head thinking where 45 could be since yesterday.
So I am approx 300 metres away, speed indicator says 29Mb is that likely to be about right? (I know it's a fair amount of guess work on line length).
29MB seems to be a conservative estimate at 300m, Ive been estimated 29.9MB at just under 500m. I dont know if things like the gauge, material (copper or aluminium), age and condition of the cables are taken into account. I think virtually all our cables up to the cabinet were replaced about 8 or 9 years ago due to a fault. Ive heard the BT checker gives conservative estimates anyway.
My dilemma at the moment is I have a very reliable, unshaped connection from BE Unlimited, but at the moment BE arent offering FTTC. I can only get 5-6MB on ADSL2+ which is fine for most things but a bit of a pain when trying to do things like stream HD video when other computers in the house are using the connection. 30-40MB would be nice, but Id rather wait for BE to offer it rather than switch providers, providing the wait isnt too long!

Remeasuring it's probably closer to 500m actually.
I currently get 3-4Mb.
Main use is missus on facebook, xbox live and a bit of usenet.
Going from 3-4 to 20-25 would be a massive boost tbh, and I can probably just about live with the 300GB cap, truely unlimited LLU from sky is quite nice for now, but realisitically I probably use under 100GB at the mo, would probably increase a bit if I had the speed mind.

Hi
I live halfway up Storforth lane & have always had huge problems with the internet..I seem to suffer from a lot of RX CRC errors - apparently this is due to my line length & the fact that the main cable running under Storforth lane is Aluminium??!? not copper..
Anyways - Since I moved to AN ISP called Xilo - my line has at least stablised, they also offer the FTTC service so happy days!!
Cant wait for Chesterfield to go Live - goodbye 2.5Mb - hello 30Mb (Hopefully!)
My line is 566m from cab to me, and I get full 40000Kbps sync.
Honestly I don't believe that, I live a little way up St Philips, and get about 4Mb.
My line must surely be longer than yours, as essentially we are fed from the same cab (but you are closer).
Not sure why your line is 2.5Mb
i live at the bottom of churchside, my cab is at the bottom of broomfield avenue , on the green, bt were working on the cab at the school yesterday, wont be long now

Only repeating what the openreach engineer had to say - that advise / analysis cost me £100.00 + as I logged an engineers call to BT as I wasn't happy the the internet performance - I was told it was within parameters & my issue was due to line length & that aluminium had been used & not copper.. - so they charged me for the call out
Tried all the normal suspects.. various filters, bell wire, 2 routers - including a Draytek 2820N - nothing improved the situation - But at least things should improve when we get the FTTC upgrade!!!

Can VDSL be fed over aluminium?
I don't fully understand why you would be on an aluminium line, it's mainly done for new houses, my house is 80 years old and I am 100% sure it's copper, obvioulsy my house is fed from the same cabinet.
Do you have your line stats so I can compare?
I'll post my stats on here when i get home form work 2nite - tried different modulations last night (apart from G.DMT - that im using at the min - but didnt improve things).
Im sure my ISP only managed to stablise my line by increasing my SNR margin which I guess effects what rate my line sync's at - so that might be why I dont get the 40,000 sync rate that you get - but still does'nt explain why the line is so unstable & prone to errors

I'm on VDSL and have an aluminium line, there were copper shortages when the estate was built ~40 years ago apparently. 300 meter d-side and 11.3 attenuation according to the engineers tester, sync is 38717/10000 Kbps and throughput is 37.5/8 Mbps.
My router stats are as follows:
G.DMT SHOWTIME up: 896000 down: 3104000 atten:11 loop:52
I'm halfway up Storforth lane & as you can see sync is not 4000000

Can VDSL be fed over aluminium?
Yes, but as with ADSL, it's happier over copper.
I don't fully understand why you would be on an aluminium line, it's mainly done for new houses
No, aluminum cable was used back in the late sixties, early seventies, when the price of copper shot up. OK for speech, but has been playing merry hell with broadband since it's roll out.

"If you put your phone number into this site http://staging.trefor.net/tech-pages/availability-ch... it will give your speed estimates ....................." It wants a UserName and Password to see the map. Which ones should I used?
Thank you.

BT used it round here for a new cabinet a year or so back.

Is that on Fibre?

No - ADSL max
2.5 - 3mb on fibre & i really would be [censored]

Damn I edited that post after counting the zeros again
My Attenuation is 49 (assuming that's your 52 figure) which is surprising as I am further down the road, guessing it must be alu, thinking mine is copper though, not sure.

I don't know. When I last used the site about a week ago it didn't ask for a user name and password to see the map. I've just checked again, now it does. Any ideas why this information is now restricted? It doesn't say anything on the website that I can see.

I found this on the website "BT has asked me to remove the FTTC postcode map. I did originally have permission to use the data, but Openreach has now objected. I am in discussions with BT Re this- if you would like to see the map back, any supportive comments would be highly welcomed."
Perhaps it was easier just to set up and ask for a user name/password rather than to actually remove the FTTC postcode map?

BT used it round here for a new cabinet a year or so back.
are you sure about that and if so how do you know ?
i have been doing this for over 20y now and i have never seen new aluminum cable going in .

Quick question do all cabinets off an exchange need to be finished before BT will allow orders?
The cabinet close to me doesn't look far off finished.
But one on the way into work isn't even there yet.
December 31st RFS date.

Is this Chesterfield exchange? If so, whereabouts do you live?
I'm in Walton but it's still showing 31st March. Several cabinets have been installed near me since last November.
Yes Chesterfield - I live in Hasland - hope it rolls out to Walton!!
I'll update regularly with the latest (hopefully the time frame wont slip again)

Do you know when BT were last doing any work on your cabinet? I'm pretty sure the ones near me have had all the work finished within the last 1-2 weeks, so should hopefully be live soon.

Cabs went in a while ago - but only a couple of weeks ago they seemed to dig a bit of the pavements up around them.. maybe putting in a fibre feed or something (im not really knowledgeable in this area so this is a guess).
Looks like I can't place my order until at least the 16th of Feb. - as soon as they accept my order i'll post
Service went live today & I successfully placed my order. BT booked to do install on the 25th Feb.
I would recommend Xilo to anyone looked to go down the FTTC route! - FANTASTIC service.
Mine accepted this morning, 4th of March for install though.

Went live without a hitch
