VDSL fttc is finally available in my area, the cabinet has been installed just up the road.
I have an asus rt n66u router which I reallly like and do not want to replace with the isp supplied all in one.
I was wondering is it easy enough to configure one of the openreach modems if I purchase one of the many on ebay, is there any particular model should look for?
Also is an engineer visit needed to to upgrade existing adsl2+ ?
|
|
|

The best one from Ebay would be a Huawei HG612 v3B. The modem doesn't need any configuration, just plug and play.

Thank you. I am not on BT, will that matter?

Simply set up your router for a PPPoE connection and connect it to the modem supplied by the engineer. Engineer visits are still typical at the moment.
EDIT:
You didn't mention you were in the IoM, don't know what the procedure is there regarding VDSL installation.

The RT-N66U doesn't have a VDSL modem.

With Sky fibre the router has to support 1483MER with DHCP Option 61.
You will need to use Wireshark to fine the username and password from the hub. IIRC.

BT Sport users beware!
Reviewed by Mr Smith. Review Posted 02/12/2013
If you want to watch BT Sport via Youview then this router is definitely not for you.
I bought this router to replace my BT Infinity modem and Home Hub 3 and since the Asus has been installed I have been unable to watch BT Sport via my Youview box.
I have raised the issue with ASUS but their support is truly awful - their response times are very slow and the support staff are technically very weak.

Apparently an engineer visit is required so they can fit a dedicated face plate. However I already fitted my own adsl faceplate to improve my connection which it did, will the VDSL plate be any different?
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
ADSL and VDSL faceplates perform similar functions but they are different.
The intention of both is to block the DSL frequencies from going onto the voice circuit and there is another filter in the modem which stops voice frequencies reaching the input stage. The faceplate filter should present a high impedance to everything in the DSL band.
However, the original ADSL filters were only designed and tested to the limits of ADSL which is just over 2MHz. VDSL started using frequencies up to 8MHz and most filters would probably cope. As VDSL moved up to higher frequencies, 12, 17 and 30 MHz then the performance of the original ADSL filters cannot be guaranteed and quite often they perform very badly at the higher frequencies either introducing phase anomalies or a low impedance which significantly attenuates the signal.
If you have a long line, an ADSL filter may be OK but if you are looking at maximum data rates/throughput then a decent VDSL filter is essential.

I have a hg612 3b and have applied unlocked firmware but need some help in setting it up to test it as I am not too sure how to set it up. I have brought it to work where we have a vdsl line connected to a DGND3700, I have changed the wan setup to use the ethernet port on the dgn but I do not seem to get a connection. The dsl light on the hg612 flashes and then lights up solid green which I presume is good. Is there anything special I need to do on the HG612?
The existing VDSL settings on the router are multiplexing VC based VPI/VCI 0/38 transfer mode PTM? I have entered the 0/38.

(HG612) On the ATM section I have EoA selected which I presume is PPPoE, VCMUX, service type no idea what this is but is set to UBR without PCR
PTM Defaults.
WAN are at the default, the broadband username and password is entered on the dgn router.
Also presumably it does both vdsl and vdsl2?
The device is synced at 34mbps down 1.5mbps up.

That's confusing.
Is the service at work FTTC, using an Openreach modem? If not, what is it and what is the normal setup? What normally connects to the phone socket?

Yes it is fibre to cab VDSL service.
At work there is no modem only the all in one device Netgear DGND3700 which has a modem built in for ADSL/VDSL. Normally the DSL port is connected directly to the phone socket.
The DGND3700 also has an ethernet wan port and can set to use either its dsl wan or ethernet wan. I have tried testing the hg612 bt setting the dgnd3700 to use it ethernet port and then connecting the HG612 to that port in the traditional modem + router only setup.

Netgear DGND3700v2 doesn't have a modem built in for VDSL. (Only ADSL/ADSL2/ADSL2+) however it does support fibre on the wan ethernet port (connected to openreach modem (VDSL)

No the 40 and 80 versions are the same standard, i.e. both VDSL2

I was going to ask the same question as this post. I am however in mainland UK.
My router is Asus RT-N16 and if i take fibre I gather any box I get will likely be a combined modem/hub from BT, Sky etc instead of the old Openreah modem? Anyone know how true this is ?
As I guess i won't be able to hack these hubs to make them modem only I was thinking I should buy an old Openreach modem off ebay and use that with my router.
Apart from Sky's wierd config set up I'd need to do to get it working (on my router i assume? ) is there anything else I'd need to be aware of trying to do this?
|
|

Apparently they used to.
MrSaffron's post sent me googling, and there are references to it being withdrawn from the product. Hence my later comment about the one the poster's employer has being a withdrawn item.

Both BT and Sky are doing an all in one box. You might also try asking the installer if they have a spare modem on the van so you can use a different router, they could be obliging. Or you can get one from eBay.
Eventually I expect all routers will have in-build VDSL modem options, as we had with ADSL.

I didn't say it will support VDSL as a modem on this router. U can use VDSL on the ethernet wan port to enabled it and connected it to openreach modem. So, u can enjoy 4 spare ports and high performance wifi on this router.

How else would the dsl port on the netgear achieve a sync of 35mbps? Interesting, my DGND3700 v1 dates from June 2011 and I now assume that this feature had been withdrawn by then.
Please, if possible, could you post a snapshot of the Netgear router statistics pop-up (from the router status page) where it shows this? Or did I miss this earlier?
Thank you.

Looks like it will probably be £200+ and I could find no mention on whether it supports vectoring, but will assume it does, wonder if it will have a Y lead like the Fritz! box, to be able to use Telephony

Note the firmware version.
Also, there is no "VDSL" setting in the options, it is set to auto.
Good news , I got the hg612 working in routed mode so at east I know it is compatible with the line. Now just to work out how to bridge it properly.

If you reset it to Factory defaults it should go back to as it was after being flashed with the unlocked firmware. That is in bridge mode and should just be plug'n'go.

Thanks for that.
I've got firmware V1.0.0.12_1.0.12 upwards and never realised that the DGND3700 v1 supported VDSL up to at least firmware V1.0.0.17_1.0.17 which is what I am also running.
Interestingly I see that the Netgear site no longer appears to have V1.0.0.17_1.0.17 available, the most recent version for the UK now apparently being V1.0.0.15_1.0.15

Under wan settings you just need ptm, bridged, pppoe bridge , transparent dhcp and clear out all of the vlan stuff.
Lave the firewall setting as it disable qos, set you apple to pppoe mode and enter username and password.

Cool, yes you now have so many more options with what router you can use and can dabble in custom firmware etc now that you have a separate modem / router.
The dgnd3700 doesn't even officially support vdsl anymore and if MT upgrade the vdsl to incorporate vectoring or up the speed from 40/2 to 80/10 the hg612 will support it.
Any chance you could post your modem stats? Telnet to it and run
