Hi just connected on Sunday to Unlimited BT Infinity 2, was installed Friday but it lost connection an hour later and was not on till Sunday afternoon.
I hoped to get around 15mb uploads but it seem stuck on 5, when will I know the final speeds of my service?

I hoped to get around 15mb uploads but it seem stuck on 5, when will I know the final speeds of my service? The initial connection is as fast as the DSLAM/modem think the line can handle, right from day one. The only adjustment most people see is downward when it turns out that the initial speed was a bit too high. If your ISP has told you that there's a training period during which the speed will rise they are wrong. I'm not sure of the ratios for FTTC but if your maximum speed is 53Mb/s then an upload of 5Mb/s may be all you can have although I'd have thought 10Mb/s more likely. I'll leave it to others to comment on that based on your stats.

Based on the noise margin, that's all you're going to get. May be worth a moan to the ISP though, as the upload is well below the lowest of the predicted speeds.
Sounds to me like there's something wrong with the install, given that you lost connection for so long, for no apparent reason.

thanks for the replies.
Regarding the install, when the engineer arrived I told him I wanted the router upstairs ,instead of running an extension he said he would "bounce" if off downstairs (a line runs from main socket to upstairs socket), could this cause the problem?

Depending on how it is wired then yes you could be causing the problem by having modem where it is.

could i swap faceplates to test HH5 in downstairs main socket? or would it required BT to change other mallarky?

If the downstairs is still the master socket then it should work in the test socket, just use a micro filter to do the socket conversion (not using the supplied faceplate helps to rule out that as a faulty component)

I'm wondering if the engineer used a pair crimped to the incoming downstairs to take the incoming signal directly upstairs to a new master and then used another pair to drop an extension back downstairs to the old master.
If that is the case then the downstairs will no longer be the first socket in the chain and the best that could be done would be to use the test socket in the upstairs.
If the faceplate was removed from upstairs and that removed the dial tone downstairs then that would show this is likely what the engineer did.

Take the faceplates off and then take some pictures of what you can see, concentrating on the various wires, any crimps and connections to various IDC terminal.
Host the images on Photobucket, Flikr or similar and link to them

Looks like a bum install to me.

its the same with the 2 blues, that was done when we moved here to give an extension upstairs, ran wire up wall as they were being re plastered , I am positive the engineer just fitted a new filtered plate upstairs with touching any wires .

Electricians aren't known for their telephony or networking knowledge.
Do you have anything plugged into the downstairs socket?
Is the downstairs socket a new SSFP ?

sky broadband always worked fine on ext, always had 17.6 dwn 1mb up, never missed a beat

My thought is that a bridge tap has been introduced.
Wiring to downstairs master looks like internal on the back A B connectors
If now two masters and phone works in both test sockets when faceplates are off then wiring is likely cause.

So, if engineer had ran extension from master it would be ok?
I had read thats what they would do but he seemed in a big hurry when I mentioned it!

Fitting vdsl faceplate and running data extension from there is preferred way.
Other ways are possible too

Well, engineer booked for Monday 8am - 1pm, he phoned at 11am and told he would be late but if I stayed in he would get to me, at 6pm I gave up ! Got new date, Wed 1pm - 6pm , no show (although 2 calls from BT asking if they had been}, told them to shove it and was connected to UK, 1 more chance then I'm off

A few no-shows and 2 engineers later, line now fitted direct to upstairs socket and the connection is now reliable although uploads no where near as advertised (17-20), been told too far away from cabinet to better 5mb on a good day !

Extension wiring usually has a far more drastic effect on downstream than upstream as the former is much more vulnerable to noise as the signal is at its weakest at that point. In contrast, the upstream is at its strongest at that point, and any noise introduced is proportionately low and will be similarly attenuated on the way to the cabinet. (The old disconnecting bellwire trick often had a very large effect on downstream speeds but made much less proportionate difference to the upstream).
I think there's something else wrong, and it will need a complaint to the ISP as the upload speed is much lower (in proportion to the downstream). It might conceivably be something wrong with the modem, but I suspect something awry in the network.

This is slightly different on FTTC as the upload spectrum is split into several segments and interleaved with the downstream, rather than being concentrated in the lowest frequency segment that travelled for many kilometres

I would still complain about your upload speed
In theory you should be getting 10Mbps
but given the SNR as said above it doesnt look like your line can hold that speed
unlucky maybe.

thanks, i cant be bothered with the hassle, today I tested speeds and my downloads have quartered to 9mb! wish I has stayed on Sky bb NOW
