Browsed these pages for a long time, now joined and this is first post.
Our rural exchange is now FTTC enabled, exchange is Wootton N Lincs.
Currenty on 7mb with BT, exchange was not unbundled and limited to ADSL2.
Contract finishes Jan 7th so will start looking around for deals after that.
Had it confirmed that I can get up to 80mb.
Friend nearby has 2 miles copper to travel and reduced to 17mb, but thats still a leg up from his current 2 to 3 mb
I am 600 mtrs from cabinet, in a low contention zone so happy with that.

That "up to 80Mbps" will be the product, and incidentally ISPs cannot these days advertise that on FTTC. Only speeds that at least 10% of their customer base achieve.
At 600 metres from the cabinet you are more likely to get around my speeds, (see my sig), though some people do get more.
What does this checker say for your phone number?

As RobertoS suggested, that does look a little too high for a 600m line.
I would have expected te downstream result to say something like: Clean 65 - 55 and Impacted maybe 58 - 40
After some work and knowing I have a good quality, low noise line, I get 72 Mbps at 440metres.

I am 600m from the cab with a speed estimate of 61. At the start I got full 80/20 but since settled at my estimate of 61meg but after overheads throughput of 57meg down 14meg upload.
You could upgrade to fttc with BT if you wanted to go with them that is

With your 7th Jan contract end date, you are probably looking close to that for an install of FTTC. Just eight working days through to Christmas, from Christmas to New Year there will be very few installs - staff will either be on leave or fixing faults in the two or three working days. After New Year again the second will be repairs and faults which take you through to 5th January ...

Very nice to have it available but expensive to take advantage of it.
BT have a deal for unlimited dload, 17mb speed for £5 a month, plus line rental.
Never had an issue with BT, I know some have, but not me after 8 years.
Heard of issues with most other providers apart from the more expensive ones.
After 6 to 7 mb 17mb will seem great, so probably take that package and add calls anytime at £7 a month.
Not bothered about using TV online as I have a Humax Freesat.

Good point about probable install times.
No rush though, we seem to manage with 2 x PC online plus 2Xlaptops and 3x Kindle.
PCs are cabled while rest is wireless and slower, but useable.
17 MB should be ample if that lot can manage on 6 to 7mb.
So probably consider a deal after contract runs out. BT always do a better deal for new customers and not so often for existing.
|
|
|
They will not class you as a "New" customer though. However, if you suggest you might move then you may get a deal.

Not my experience.
You can get a better deal as existing account holder on price yes, but when new deals come up a transfer from an existing account is rarely avaialble, open to new customers only. Much like banks and building societies do with their account packages.
Mind you, its worth a try! thanks

In your opening post you talk about yourself with an 80Mbps estimate and a friend 2 miles from the cabinet with a 17Mbps estimate. Your last couple of posts seem to be about you and 17Mbps FTTC.

Yes because I do not need or want to pay for the full potential of the service.
17MB will be fine for the household needs.
Simple as that

I think you are getting confused by the BT website, where ADSLx and FTTC are mixed up in a very messy way. .
(By the way, MBps or Mbps. 1MBps = 8Mbps).
If your FTTC estimate is 80Mbps, what product are you on about that offers 17Mbps, assuming that's what you mean? Your estimate table shows no ADSL2+ (nor ADSL2 which is a different thing again). It just shows FTTC or ADSL Max.
You are already on the maximum speed for ADSL Max. You cannot get the advertised 17Mbps ADSL2+ product, which is not FTTC. On FTTC you have Infinity 1 (up to 38Mbps) or Infinity 2 (up to 76Mbps) available. Or of course the equivalent from a hundred or so other ISPs.

Have a look at the first post. That refers to a friend 2miles further away who can only get 17 Mbps.

I probably read it the same as Robertos, To me he was talking about looking for fttc deals when his contract is up, as well as talking about his friend

You've missed that he is now talking about the BT ADSL2+ 17Mbps product for himself, under the misapprehension (caused by the idiotic BT website layout), that it is FTTC.
In the OP the 17Mbps for his friend was FTTC degraded by distance .

Where does his post of teh BT figures show anything about ADSL2+?

Where does his post of teh BT figures show anything about ADSL2+?
It only gives FTTC clean/ impacted and ADSL Max. or fixed. Precisely.
Start at his post following the one where he gives that estimate table. Also, if you haven't already done so, take a look at this BT Page, which starts and ends with Infinity.
Myself, tthom and Andrew all think he is mistakenly looking at the ADSLx products, thinking they are FTTC.
I don't see his exact price, but he is almost certainly looking at the non-FTTC, (i.e. ADSL2x), 17Mbps packages, thinking they are "Infinity". It's a shockingly confusing page.
He has said he will probably take the 17Mbps as he doesn't need faster and doesn't want to pay for faster.

Yes the ones who noticed are correct. My service is ADSL MAX, my error.
You are also correct that I was under the impression that the 17MB deal was fibre, it is indeed ADSL MAX.....Although I have never heard of anyone getting anywhere near 17MB on that service.
I found out these things myself today when I rang BT.Long story short, ended up ordering Infinity 38MB with Homehub 5 for only £2 per month more than my ADSL MAX contract!
Pretty much a no brainer t that point.
The advisor checked my line capabilites and said I was in an exceptionally low contention area and "it" was showing 40> 41 MB avilable.
So more enlightened and happy with the deal... Cabinet engineer booked 16th Jan so sit and wait until then..
Thanks for all the thoughts and advice, learning all the time............

It should be great!
Bear in mind that the phone wiring in the house is more important on VDSL2 than on ADSLx, but given your estimates it probably won't affect you even if yours is a mess.
Let us know how it goes, and come back if there are any problems .

Been through the house wiring as best as I can, no extentions, good filters where fitted, had master socket updated by BT a year or so ago, uneeded wires left unconnected, twisted pair replaced socket to homehub, instead of cheap supplied one.All cables kept short as poss and not running near mains cable.
Phone line from post to house replaced a year ago.
Not much more I could thnk of .
